Hi Kiwis I'm TaimuRadiu and I'm here to tell you about my autistic passion, shortwave radio.

Shortwave radio is a key to global communication when the Internet goes down, and it will. Used to broadcast in high frequencies from about 3000 khz to 30 000 khz, it has a literal global reach and can be invaluable at times. Since, however, it cannot be tracked and quantified like how many people go to bigfatchickswithdicks.com, governmental global broadcasters have largely abandoned it. Those that remain are usually not in English, but those that are in English are ones that want to get their message out to shithole countries, like China, those in AFrica, and New Zealand. And, also because of the global reception of the broadcasts, religious broadcasters and hobbyists broadcast as well.

Let's say you get a shortwave radio. (Reviewbrah recommends the Tecsun PL-880. I've been told that's a fine radio, but it tends to drift. My weapon of choice is a C Crane Skywave SSB.) Certain models have prongs in the back that allow you to ground it and connect to an external antenna. If the receiver is of a good enough quality, it will NOT overload the radio and enable you to hear quite exceptional individuals. You will still need an external wire antenna to get in the dank DX (reception of distant stations)

Here are some truly exceptional individuals:

Brother R.G. Stair, the Overcomer. Probably one of the guys propping up US domestic shortwave radio. (It should be noted here that according to the FCC, shortwave radio stations in the United States are not allowed to broadcast to the domestic population, but they do anyway.) Noted for having several wrong predictions of doomsday, a few years ago he was arrested on charges of molesting and raping members of his congregation, probably the most notable being when he dragged a 12 year old girl up to the front and felt her boobs in front of everyone. So this man is a convicted pedophile, has a compound in South Carolina, and can't have any minors there.

Pastor Peter J Peters. Christian Identity (basically "we was kangz," but for white people) and very hard on the Jewish Question. He died like 10 years ago of kidney disease. Noted for being on the SPLC hate list, which he wore as a badge of honor. The successors to his "ministry" currently broadcast on WTWW.

Allan H Weiner - Not a bad man, per se, but he has lolcow tendencies. Probably the king of the pirates and he owns WBCQ in northern Maine, which recently finished building a 500 kilowatt system to broadcast the dreck from World's Last Chance Ministries, which propagates the obvious Biblical truth of the flat earth. I call him "king of the pirates" since his efforts to start a pirate station off the US shores, the MV Sarah, caused Reagan to extend the territorial waters of the USA in the 80s just to personally fuck with him.

(((Tony Alamo))), a "Christian" minister who claimed that he would be able to resurrect his wife in 90 days, is currently dead after serving his natural life in jail for raping a bunch of minors.

Not a lolcow but a lolstation, WWCR, from Nashville, Tennessee. Like nearly all US stations, the Overcomer has bought heavy time on it. Noted in the 90s for Art Bell suing them over the allegation from one of their program hosts, Ted Gunderson, alleging that he was a pedophile. Also on the SPLC hate list.

Alexander Emmerich Jones buys heavy amounts of time on WWCR. 12.160 mhZ on your shortwave dial every afternoon; 4.84 mhZ at night.

There are, of course, other broadcasters. There is Radio Havana-Cuba, which broadcasts the obvious truth of Communism and, due to their head, Arnie Coro, being incompetent, also sometimes is broadcast on the same frequencies as the Cuban numbers stations. The USA has counter-programming to RHC, Radio Marti, which is heavily jammed by Cuba, probably doesn't get out much to the island, but which I can hear very well more than a thousand miles away from where they're transmitting to.

Voice of Korea has that old school Cold War feel to it. Rages against the dotard Trump.

WRMI relays a bunch of stuff from Europe, including Radio Albania, which has the unique benefit of being as boring as it ever was. If you want to know about the Albanian harvests, there you go.

Reviewbrah broadcasts on WRMI, WBCQ, and WWCR, as well as others across the world. He's not a lolcow, but I enjoy his programming.

If you want actual content, I do like China Radio International, NHK World, and, may Allah forgive me, Radio New Zealand International.

If you want to listen to hams drone on, I gotcha fam. 14.313 mhZ is the frequency you want if you want to hear radio /pol/. A Canadian lolcow broadcasts on this frequency, for more info: http://www.ve7kfm.com/

And, of course, I must mention - pirates! Yes there are many pirates on the short waves, very few of which are lolcows except maybe for Radio YHWH, who has been busted several times and is pretty creepy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru9hkV7MMWo

Here are some resources for the aspiring shortwaver:

Glenn Hauser's World of Radio. The best newsletter full of info for the shortwave enthusiast. http://worldofradio.com/

HF Underground, for when you want to know about the pirates mateys. https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php

SWLing Post, for raw info and opinion on shortwave across the world https://swling.com/blog/

Want to listen online? Yo, go here https://sdr.hu/ - receivers from all across the world, hooked up to the Internet so your lazy ass doesn't have to go outside and try to listen to Alex Jones sell you the water filters to keep you from being a gay frog.

If you want to listen to some of the stations online, here:

http://wtww.us/ - WTWW, I like their music programming but when they say "Incredible Bible Teaching," that means no niggers.
http://www.wwcr.com/ - WWCR, for when you absolutely, positively, must go full lolcow.
https://www.wrmi.net - WRMI, which isn't as stupid. Broadcasts a wide variety of international programming. I personally like listening to Radio Prague in the mornings.
http://www.wbcq.com/ - WBCQ, plays some fine programming but Allan Weiner counts Brother Stair as a close personal friend, so yeah.

Enjoy!

Radio piracy intrigues me. Both the classical kind and the notion of sending warez over radio waves. I've been interested in fucking around with a pirate radio station, but heard the FCC can and will triangulate your ass and subsequently fine it. How true is this?

I've always wanted to do something with radio. Alas, there are too few hours in a day.
What sort of money are we talking about with a basic C Crane setup?

Not very. Unless you live within 100 miles of Detroit; word has it the man in charge of the FCC office there cares about shortwave.

Less than $100. They're very nice pocket radios. I think they're a branded version of a Chinese manufacturer.

I had one of those basic World Radios from Radio Shack back when radios were things. Seems neat enough. I think I saw something about Reviewbrah buying time on shortwave.

From what I understand yes, but they lean towards enforcement when you're getting in the way. Fuck around on an unused frequency and don't bleed into anybody licensed or they'll be a lot quicker on the pickup, also don't do stuff like take calls about where the good drug dealers are like the local pirate "Street Heat" did to piss off local cops so they become interested in helping the FCC.
Last pirate I heard was the "MD 40 Network", which put on airs of being a real station to the point they carried Dave Ramsey.

Edit- oh pirate shortwave, yeah I don't think many fucks are given at all about that, especially if you're not stepping on the toes of other people, those examples I was talking were FM derp

I’ve been interested in this stuff for a while, but I haven’t actually bought anything. Haven’t really found a good reason yet.
I guess my question is, what does it offer to a normal dude that the internet doesn’t? What’s the main draw? Is it worth the money?
Either way, I think it’s neat that there’s a bunch of people chatting over there own radios. I just don’t know what I would do with one.

Probably the king of the pirates

But he's an H, not a D!

Anyway, I remember a post in the LiveJournal community wtf_inc about numbers stations. I liked the post because it described something weird and interesting but not gross.

It's interesting because you don't need the Internet for it. Also, there's a lot that simply isn't streamed, or actually sounds MUCH better over the radio than over a stream. Analog, motherfucker. Also the glowniggers can't track what you're listening to.

goddamn glow-in-the-dark CIA niggers...
What would you talk about? We talk here on the Farms because there's a general theme of making fun of people, there's a standard. Besides radios, what do you talk about over radio?
Maybe running a DJ thing could be fun, but music copyright, busyness, no desire for celebrity, and my general laziness would make that fizzle out within a week.

Judging by HF Underground, music, weird shit, and pornographic SSTV images (SSTV = slow scan tv, think jpegs)

Judging by the ham bands: BOOMIN

Another reason to listen to shortwave: on 6105 khz right now there is a discussion in Japanese via NHK on fujoshi and how they're an integral part of the anime fandom

Edit: my moon sucks, but they're talking about fujos and the Jojo fandom. Nuke this gay earth

My first memories of shortwave were my parents listening on a big Grundig that we still have (though I'm not sure if it's worked in 20 years) to BBC World Service and its alternating loud and quiet signal which I understand now had something to do with the shape of the waves. I used to enjoy listening to Radio Japan's one hour broadcast in the mid-1990s as well as WRNO shortwave from New Orleans at 15.420MHz for certain hosts.

I still have a shortwave radio that works but I rarely use it anymore as there isn't much in English that I can't listen to in much better sound quality online and, when I just want to listen to AM or FM radio, I have smaller, more portable options. I'm a big fan of DX'ing with my AM, though, I can quite easily hear stations from New York City from 500 miles away in the evening.

WRNO is technically still around, but for some reason it broadcasts a bunch of (presumably pirated) Chinese programming from Deutsche Welle. DW for some reason only has major programming on SW be Bundesliga games in Hausa for Mama Merkel's boys.

NHK has programming in Spanish and Portuguese via WHRI and not in English. Much like KBS World, both could have WHRI run English language programs, they just don't want to.

One of the saddest days in my life was when the CBC decided to quit all shortwave and tear down the massive complex in Sackville NB. (My SO tells me to not feel bad, as it is, as he calls it, "leaf containment").

All that aside, AM DXing is fun. There are a lot of "ethnic" programs to hear, even music, in my area gotten from Toronto, Detroit, and if you're lucky, you can get in Cuban AM stations jamming Yanquis puercas.

I wish this thread was more active. I spend more time on Reddit yelling at boomers who are mean to all newcomers in the hobby for asking questions than having conversations about it with people who aren’t three times my age.

I have come across some unflinchingly offensive and bizarre stuff on shortwave that I would not hear anywhere else. It seems like a goldmine for people who enjoy internet weirdos.

Any particularly interesting things you've found?
