May or may not be my ISP throttling access, but the site (both .net and .st) are loading exceedingly slowly over my home broadband connection (random connection timeouts, images not loading). Loads fantastic over cellular and Tor (both the clearnet domains and the .onion domain).

UPDATE:
the following error appears when trying to access the site, but only over my home broadband connection. Tor and cellular work excellently.

Tried to violently use the site but as they have for the last week uploads are not working right.

Opened shitton of tabs without issue (last week opening more then 2 or 3 would cause page not displayed), but uploads are still being strange.

Uploads of videos even smaller ones still fail with a message "something went wrong please contact administrator" on clearnet.

Images seem to upload fine though.

It's been nice and snappy since chat was disabled but just started getting sluggish in the last minute or so.

Edits: took ~5 seconds for this comment to appear after posting, then timed out the first time I tried to edit it.

Edit2: site's running like shit again, button clicks spinning eternally and pages returning "Page could not be loaded" about half the time.

Scratch the page cannot be loaded being gone. It's become very contant now with only one tab open.

I'll echo this; I had issues all of last week with uploading. For a brief window of time in the last 24 hours it was more stable, and not wanting to miss my window of opportunity I spent two hours last night painstakingly uploading 20 clips one at a time until they all were included in my post. Sometimes it would fail after 10% uploaded, sometimes it would spit it right out and tell me to contact a site administrator, other times it slowly worked. No idea as to why it would do this.

Just now I couldn't even upload a 5mb gif to my profile. Hopefully the problem can be solved ASAP. Thanks again for your hard work Null!

On TOR only, so far posting and editing have been zippier and more consistent than it has been for the last few months, since chat got disabled.

Attachments remain slow but TOR itself is probably responsible for that, the slowness at least has been uninterrupted which seems to represent a change compared to recently. I uploaded a 10mb file for this post just to check: took a bit, but it didn't fail or stick at some arbitrary point and never finish which is more usual over TOR.

Possibly related: I've noticed over the last few months that TOR seemed to take a dump and get really slow and ultimately require an identity change to get consistent performance just for browsing when I'd let the tab idle for a while (sometimes it could be made palatable but still slow with only circuit changes), and wondered if there was a connection between chat wanting to continue to exist and update itself on the loaded but idle page conflicting with the DDOS protection eventually kicking in while idle, but without the page refreshing to get a new token. I'll see if I notice this behavior while chat is disabled as the day goes on since it usually does not take long to notice that issue.

Edit: Normally after leaving the tab alone for an hour and change I'd have issues when refreshing the page, this has not happened yet. So far so good.

Edit 2 hours later: Things are still zippier than yesterday on TOR but have slowed down a smidge, but nowhere near the minimum 1 identity change and chugging load times of the before times.

Performance is much, much improved. Before chat threads such as the Israel War thread were so bad that I had to continuedly open the next page in a different tab, as by the time I'd finish reading one page the whole tab would hang and refuse to reload or do anything. Now I can have many tabs open and Edge still only uses like 0.5% cpu max

I know that chat is Null's comfy place but how many times has it broken or compromised the site now?
I know you didn't directly say we should kill chat, but if chat was fully killed it would hurt the community. Besides, we'd likely congregate offsite, and that isn't ideal at all.

Chat has been a constant thorn in my side for literally years. It started back when we were on phpBB and used an anime avatar "dark chat" which had a "fast mode". The "fast mode" for darkchat was a text file. It constantly rewrote and saved a text file every message. This was not fast.

I have probably rewritten chat 4 times by now in two different languages for over 10 years. The problem now is that chat works very well but uses websockets which are somehow horrifically damaging network connectivity. I don't really know how. There's so many moving parts with KiwiFlare that I am singularly responsible for and it has been impossible for me to accurately diagnose what the fucking problem is.

(And before anyone suggests "open more tcp ports", that's not the issue.)

Chat is important though. People still want to chat even if there is no chat. If there is no chat to chat in, what do they use? Discord. What happens in Discord? Cancer. Chat is open, public, scrutinized, gatekept, and directly integrated into the account system. Discord is not, and Discord chats are basically an IV drip of cancer.

Both .net and Tor work fine but .st won't load.
Have we left behind our friends of São Tomé?

also didn't work for me a few hours ago but now .st is working without issue, if you have the time verify if it also works for you
.st loads fine for me now too. In honor of that, here are some fun history facts about Jewish children on São Tomé and Príncipe (never forget the Príncipe):

TLDR Warski's great-great-grandpappy fed Jewish children to crocodiles.

is there a way to make chat "opt in"? like having to enable it in settings, or have a toggle or "click to enable" button on each page?
My understanding is that part of the reason chat bogs down everyone is that it is processing EVERYONE in the chat, which ends up being everyone what has a chat enabled page open. If you could have only the people who want to participate in the chat accessing the chat then only they would be affected by slowdowns, which would be reduced as the number of chat participants would be reduced.

or would it be possible to have a read-only mode for chat that doesn't process everyone who's using the chat unless they choose to participate? That could be a manual toggle, then if it's effective made an automatic so that chat is automatically in the more efficient read-only mode until someone submits something to chat.

Just wanted to add this: there was things that so called chat mods do which would disconnect inactive/other people. It should be login only to see the chatroom as well to prevent scrapers/resource hogging.
