Black Metal Recommendation:

Vespéral - La mort de l'âme (2025)

Second full-length by this Québécois quartet formed by Nakkabre and Cauchemar from Conifére, Atrocité from Ossuaire and Sovannak, also from Ossuaire, Oppression, Putamen Insula, etc...

A brilliant follow-up to 2023's highly celebrated debut, "Nuits Blanches", this release sees the band maintaining the ethos and atmosphere behind their sound yet chaning things up a bit. Still focused around bucolic themes from the darkened corners of the spirit, Vespéral weaves melodies of invernal melancholy and decaying despondency.

Swallowed in the shadows of the mind and physical realms alike, Vespéral's striking guitarwork and pounding drums carry a fading torch from withing the most visceral human nature where no gleam of light barely shines. A sound that is now deprived from the most Punk-ish and Oi!-ish elements of the previous albums, with the exception of the last two tracks, and a follows a more gallopant, intricate, ancient way of portentuous riffing, not unlike Departure Chandelier, Osculum Infame, Blessed in Sin, etc, laced in mystical, atmospheric keyboard work.

Digital via the band's bandcamp page. Tape coming out via Phantom Lure and LP format to be dealt with by Goatowarex.

Tracklist:
1 La Perte de soi 00:00
2 Un Brouillard fantômatique 02:49
3 Nos Délires d'autrefois 10:00
4 Lorsqu'une chandelle s'atténue 15:26
5 Mauvais présage 21:25
6 La Corde d'un pendu 22:32
7 Souffle Glacial 27:27
8 Cruel Silence 33:16

Really enjoyed this, manages to strike a good balance of being atmospheric & spacey but still riff-heavy.

I just gotta vent because of the recent show that I fucking hate War Pigs. I never particularly liked it before but after hearing it a billion times I can't stand it. People have been gushing over how le deep it is, it's a fucking anti war 70s song, there's hundreds of those and the lyrics aren't any more deep or interesting than any of the other ones from the era. Doesn't help that I'm also seeing people tie it to Israel and Palestines gay fucking fight I don't care about.
Same with Iron Man and Paranoid, overplayed as shit. I don't think they're even necessarily bad tracks but man normies can't fucking get enough of them, and besides, Hand of Doom, Fairies Wear Boots and Rat Salad send them home on a STRRREEEEETCHER.

Honestly, in my experience it seems like most metalheads all switched from being edgelord anti-christian gore connoisseurs in the 90s to the most bog-standard lefty tankie corpo-shills. To me this was very sudden but I was a normie for the most part. What do you mean you used to love albums about burning churches, and how God was a faggot, and shooting up schools while raping whores? Now you get your panties in a bunch when you even remotely sniff the most milquetoast conservative views from a band?

I'm not at all a white nationalist (controversial on here, I know), but it makes me want to listen to solely NSBM just to fucking piss these faggots off. Or honestly even ... gasp! Christian metal?! Any recs for actual "right-leaning" bands that aren't too cringe or go full "gas the jews"?
It was bizarre watching my group of friends who used to love and introduce me to "problematic" bands like Peste Noire and Burzum and Deathspell Omega do a complete about-face in 2016 and suddenly pretend they're all terrible and they never liked them in the first place and now nobody should listen to them. The entire situation in metal has been very 1984 we were always at war with east Asia.

And yet we also live in a timeline where one of the leading Metal zines here in Germany and for the German language countries absolved Absurd of being a right-wing band and ackshually never being Nazi. One of the people behind this zine is involved in organizing a festival in Hamburg. They are going to have Forteresse playing, a band the zine refused to review for years bc of being too problematic.

This sounds more like Wolf on vocals than Hendrik but it's a song from the Schwarze Bande album which saw Hendrik on vocals.
Absurd is one of my favorite black metal bands so far, Im just getting into it so Im not too familiar with the lore.

IDK how this will be received in this thread given this is more black metal/kvlt oriented, but legendary alternative metal band Deftones just released a new single yesterday:

my mind is a mountain (2025)

Sounds very much like a song from Koi No Yokan (2012), or maybe the song Diamond Eyes from the album with the same name (2010), so I think they're going back to a sound from that era.

Full album is called "private music" and will be releasing 22 August 2025.

Good luck. The lore is wild and confusing at times. Lot's of gay drama involved.

And went on to make Fallen, which is such a fucking good album.

Idk, the post-prison albums don't do it for me. They don't click at all. They feel just like rehashed stuff. Listened to Belus and Fallen an couple of times but whenever I listen to them I ended up putting up the pre-prison albums instead. People can meme all the shit out of Filosofem and shit on it it's still one of the best Black Metal albums period. Same for Hvis lyset tar oss. Also it feels like there are way to many bands out there who are doing what Varg did before going to jail and after getting released and they are doing it better. Like he just has fallen out of time (which he kind of actually has; dude lives in his very own world nowadays).

For me, it's Inquisition and Emperor when it comes to peak BM riffage.

Daily reminder that despite their CP allegations, coming from MetalSucks of all places and seeing how Dagon is still around, I'd tend to believe that he is innocent.

Is the LP reissue of this any good or did they just decide to press an mp3?

I don't know. Never bought one of the LP represses bc the source they are coming from is ... yeah. Some Russian label that did only BBH LP represses and then vanished. Allegedley it was run by some Russian who was in contact with the BBH guys. And now they pop up at Asrar and fuck Asrar.
