Black Metal Recommendation:
Really enjoyed this, manages to strike a good balance of being atmospheric & spacey but still riff-heavy.
Vespéral - La mort de l'âme (2025)
Second full-length by this Québécois quartet formed by Nakkabre and Cauchemar from Conifére, Atrocité from Ossuaire and Sovannak, also from Ossuaire, Oppression, Putamen Insula, etc...
A brilliant follow-up to 2023's highly celebrated debut, "Nuits Blanches", this release sees the band maintaining the ethos and atmosphere behind their sound yet chaning things up a bit. Still focused around bucolic themes from the darkened corners of the spirit, Vespéral weaves melodies of invernal melancholy and decaying despondency.
Swallowed in the shadows of the mind and physical realms alike, Vespéral's striking guitarwork and pounding drums carry a fading torch from withing the most visceral human nature where no gleam of light barely shines. A sound that is now deprived from the most Punk-ish and Oi!-ish elements of the previous albums, with the exception of the last two tracks, and a follows a more gallopant, intricate, ancient way of portentuous riffing, not unlike Departure Chandelier, Osculum Infame, Blessed in Sin, etc, laced in mystical, atmospheric keyboard work.
Digital via the band's bandcamp page. Tape coming out via Phantom Lure and LP format to be dealt with by Goatowarex.
