I probably wouldn't see them again unless they were with a band I actually liked,
Yeah that keeps happening. I initially blew them off as a mediocre fotm but they seem to have some longevity, so I gave them another shot, since hey, that many people can't be wrong right?

Well they still seem to kinda suck, I dunno

I thought maybe I was too lenient on live bands for a while, because I kept seeing bands that I didn't really care for that just put on a great show (because they were with other bands that I DID like), but then the last show I went to I almost left fucking mad because the support acts were absolutely fucking terrible (Glassing and some local garbage). But yeah, I put on a Blood Incantation song the other day and it was just lame. Great live though, if you've got another reason to go.

All Them Witches is another one. Can't fucking stand any of their albums. Saw them live (they were playing with King Buffalo), and was like "What the fuck is this band?!? They are great!!" Double checked by trying an album again, and, nope, they still sucked. And that was at a clean show, so can't even blame the contact high or anything.

Hate to support the cliché, but some bands are just good live and only live.

Curious how the local scene is for other people... there's a small show happening with a bunch of local bands, it's a mismatch of metal subgenres and they all don't really sound good but I'm going anyways.
Not great unfortunately. Lot of straight edge hardcore and slam bands. I have much more respect for straight edge than slam. I’ve seen some local metal bands here and they’re almost always the same. Death metal with out of tune guitars and guys that can’t sing. I’m often reminded of that meme where someone left a comment on a black metal song on YouTube saying “this shit sucks I’ll stick to Dokken”. My thoughts on my local scene are similar.

Day One of Hells Heroes is in the books. In regards to the pre-party, Onslaught absolutely killed it. One of my all time favorite thrash sets. Pit was extremely violent. I think I got one of my teeth rattled loose. I should’ve only went for Onslaught. My respect for Warlord and Cirith Ungol, which I like as much as the next guy, but they were a little low energy and not really my preferred live music. Tim Baker’s still got it though. Plus he had aura so I give him some points there.

For day one, Chris Holmes brought the fucking house down with the WASP set. The walls were sweating. Everyone knew every word to every song. I probably helped 20 different people into the air. Definitely the most crowd surfing I had ever seen. Other standouts of the day: The Jag Panzer Ample Destruction set absolutely killed. Hellbutcher was good too. Rest of the day really wasn’t my thing and I left after Holmes. If this was 10 years ago, I probably would’ve went out of my way to catch every band and get to know as much of the material as possible, but now I’m at a point where I know what I like and what I don’t like. Today is about to be a warzone. Outside stage is absolutely stacked. It kicks off with Toxic Holocaust into Aura Noir. I’m hoping to not get my shit kicked in during that.

Also, Loudness cancelled (I also heard the sky is blue). They’re extending UDO’s set though so more Accept classics. That works for me!

Day 2 of Hells Heroes was somewhat eventful. Toxic Holocaust and Aura Noir were both great. Aura Noir especially I was surprised by. Great live sound. I did a lot of moshing during Holocaust and Aura Noir. Inside, Power From Hell and Bat killed. I wish I could’ve seen more of Bat’s set but I wanted to get a good spot for UDO.

UDO was good. Kind of hard to have a bad time hearing all those Accept songs live. I grew up on those albums more or less. His backing band I wasn’t very impressed by and I think they were all newer, or at least they looked like it. I still had a good time. He was much better in 2017 though when I saw him.

I started day 3 with Whiplash WHICH FUCKING KILLED. I’ve said this a lot but one of my favorite sets so far. Virgin Steele is playing right now, and not to disappoint anyone, but they sound like asscheeks. I’m probably about to leave and make a borg and come back for Butcher, whom I am quite excited for. I’m gonna catch Butcher, At War, and Tankard and then probably leave.

My respect for Blood Fire Death obviously, but at my advanced age of 28 I do find myself a little tuckered out and I’m also staring down a 10 hour drive tomorrow. All in all so far, great time. I had slightly more fun last year but I also had my brother with me last year. And also Saxon is one of my all time favorites.

EDIT: forgot to mention Voivod fucking killed.

On the same subject, I never got why Timeghoul has such a cult following either.
They're proggy without being pretentious and don't really write riffs like any other death metal band, combined with an absolutely immense sense of atmosphere. They're like if a Twilight Zone episode were a death metal band.

I need to give them a more studious listen. I just remember back in the 2010s when caverncore/osdm revival was the big thing, everyone in that scene acted like Timeghoul was the holy grail of death metal. Did they have some kind of lost media lore or am I remembering that wrong?

Let's Rock Today, I don't care for the singer but the instrumentals are impressive. This is one of the only guys who "get it" when it comes to nailing an older raw sound while adding decent modern elements to his compositions.

I like Matt Wood's work with drums, he fucking killed it in vein.fm and fleshwater, sad that he left those bands but at least he's still going.
Fleshwater is so dull without his drums.

Nah this is dog shit honestly, my taste in music is fucking atrocious.

So here's
Vein.fm Ripple

No, they're just the ultimate example of that obscure underground act vindicated by the internet. Their entire output is two demos, and they were near completely unknown before the online metal community rediscovered them. Then to top it off they weren't just some sloppy carcass worship or something, they played a really unique sound that few bands have really replicated.

This one caught me off guard. I'm admittedly pretty checked out of modern Darkthrone, but this is bretty gud.

4 way split between Chevallier Skrog, Otras, Bahratal and Pakosteň.

I'm gonna be honest, new Darkthrone sounds like shit. I'm convinced it's one big shitpost.
Fenriz is laughing at you and you're cheering!
