I'm not ashamed to say that, having grown up a sheltered kid in farm country, I remember the exact moment I discovered I liked metal and it was seeing Metallica perform Fuel on Saturday Night Live when I was in middle school. Before then I probably hadn't heard anything harder than The Offspring and I hadn't realized that music was supposed to make you feel stuff.

That being said... when I eventually did end up in a record store after that, the album I walked out with was Master of Puppets, because hearing samples of that was like looking into the face of God.

Edit: Happy 100 pages, fuckers

It's always seemed strange to me that people are surprised by how bad they've gotten. Metallica was always the weakest of the Big Four
Nobody gives a shit about Anthrax and Slayer was a band only edgelords listened to. Only Metallica and Megadeth became pretty much relevant after 40 years of activity because musically they have more appeal.

I compare the big 4 to the big 4 adult cartoons

Metallica is the Simpsons. Trail blazing and iconic in their heyday but have stuck around past that prime and the recent seasons/albums dont have the same magic.

Megadeth is south park. Not only is Rust in peace and the earlier seasons of south park iconic but South park stayed more solid as time went by and there are bangers nearly every season. Just like there are excellent songs on megadeth albums post countdown to extinction. Also both have edgy politics that arent that deep when you scratch the surface.

Slayer is Family Guy. Great at what they do and sometimes it really hits the spot but just recycling the same gimmicks over and over.

Anthrax I think is Futurama I guess because they are sort of quirky. I will have to work on this one.

This is the single gayest metal thread I've ever been in.
Yeah, explain to me how from Divine Intervention onwards is not edgelord shit. Not to mention Slayer jumped in the nu-metal bandwagon when it was trendy so beat it.

If Risk, The World Needs a Hero, The System Has Failed, Thirteen and Super Collider are solid then Limp Bizkit were the genius of their time.

...after a while every death and black metal band starts sounding as same old. I know I know, there is always something. But sometimes I just want to tell the difference between the songs. To this end:

That is all.

You didn't specify which albums you meant. Yes, post-Seasons in the Abyss Slayer is pretty bad, but Metallica and Anthrax also went to shit after 1990. The only 'big four' band to continue releasing albums worth hearing is Megadeth.

FFS thrash metal as a whole became a hollow shell of itself.

Death metal with bands like Death, Cynic, Atheist, Necrophagist, Nile and Deicide have more to offer than thrash metal nowadays.

Megadeth sought to be as commercially successful as Metallica but they couldn't. Just listen to their discography between 1992 - 1999. And even then they relapse on that with records like Th1rt3en and Super Collider.

As for the rest what about it? Only Endgame seemed to be really interesting and I didn't even bother with Dystopia and TSTDTD because as with any thrash metal band the classics stand out more.

Metallica spares metal fans of more mediocre albums because their gross profit comes from touring rather than studio.

I've tried to listen to both Load and Reload albums including that abhorrent St. Anger album. Overall, barring Fuel, Until It Sleeps and The Unforgiven II both Load and Reload sound very fucking corny and unnecessarily lengthy.
I only really like Outlaw Torn and Fixxxer, maybe a couple of others. I haven't heard much of their back-to-the-roots stuff but it was all as exciting as paint drying.

Maybe in 1995, "nowadays" listen to Power Trip

I got into metal at the start of this year my favorites are slayer, mercyful fate, nunslaughter and darkthrone. I really love black metal and death metal, but I like thrash and grind a lot as well. Any other bands anyone could recommend?
Instead of hitting you with a whole laundry list: Deceased, Autopsy, Cirith Ungol, Eternal Champion

whats the band in the left hand corner, can't tell.
Infester (that's their only album in the right hand corner)

My musical tastes only goes 'till 2009 because in the 2010s metal album production became much less raw and organic and way more bland and processed. That's what keeps me from listening to modern metal or any kind of modern release from old bands. As if all bands sound literally the fucking same.

Simple and repetitive song compostition with boosted mids sound very boring.

2000s releases from bands like Nile and Prototype are worth listening because guitars still sound a bit scooped instead of cranking mids all the way up. Necrophagist have prog and technical compositions to compensate for the boosted mids.

If Metallica didn't had a boner for boosted mids their recent releases (Hardwired and 72 Seasons) wouldn't sound that vapid.

black metal and death metal
Look into Death, personally I'm a huge fan of Leprosy myself. If you like death metal, I think you're going to like Death, Chuck Schuldiner and this band were very influential on the development of the genre.

As well, I'd also recommend Emperor if you haven't yet touched them, Rotting Christ, Deicide...

There's so much out there tbh, I'd suggest just trying anything that catches your ear and seeing what you like, that's part of the fun imo.

If you like Slayer try Sodom. Merciful Fate->Death SS, Nunslaughter->Midnight, Darkthrone->Burzum.

for good grind try Impetigo, Carcass & Blood Duster

Besides Grenadier and House of Atreus, are there other bands that try to do that Arghoslent-style of Death Metal with triumphant melodic riffs?

for other thrash, try Sepultura (up until 1993, when their sound changed), Kreator, Demolition Hammer, Coroner, Dark Angel, Morbid Saint. Profanatica was among the first American black metal bands, their style is closer to the first wave BM bands like Bathory, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Venom. Bands like Archgoat and Teitanblood fuse elements of black metal and death metal, and Necrophobic has always been one of my favorites.

RATBASTERDZ sequel, Jay's Day now up for all you metalcore fans.
