I never got to play these growing up.

American McGee's Alice series. Plus Alice: Madness Returns. I love her dresses are themed in each world.

There will never be another Alice entry because McGee has officially retired from gaming.

Definitely does the mental patient thing so much better than Sucker Punch and Velvet Assassin ever could. Tumblr_l_832004432349697.gifTumblr_l_831995905863294.gif

Never got to complete the first game because I had a list of other games I was a lot more interested to play and also because that PC I had blew up at some point.

I got to say that this was an interesting take on the original story and including dark characters that were in the original book was an amazing touch as well, and all of the creepy vibe that this game has is pretty good, it almost like if it's coming from a Tim Burton production (Golden era Tim Burton production, not the crap made by Disney in 2010).

Maybe I should get this game again and finally complete it.

I hadn't heard American had retired, that's a shame the man was a real OG from back in the Doom 2 days who wasn't afraid to call out the thots and coomers for sexualizing his version of Alice. I have Madness Returns but I have only played the first one, gonna correct that now.

The Cheshire cat design and voice is what I remember most about the first game. Easily, one of my favorite characters of all time. I never got around to beating Alice: Madness Returns though. However, I did love the weapons and worlds in the game.

Roger Jackson is a gem of a voice actor. His Cheshire cat lines are crisp and remind me a lot of the late and great Vincent Price.

Obligatory Civvie-11 plug here. I feel like this is one of his more enjoyable videos thanks to his positive view of the game and his knowledge of the people and studios of the game industry from the era. His videos where he doesn't have much knowledge/interest in a game are kinda boring.

American McGee is definitely a character. When he was a teen, his mom sold everything in the house to pay for plane tickets and troon surgery for her "girlfriend".

From the book Masters of Doom:

"McGee had a number of stepfathers when growing up until his mother finally settled into a relationship with a trans woman. When McGee was sixteen, he came home from school and found his house empty and abandoned; the only things left were his bed, his books, his clothes and his Commodore 64 computer. His mother had sold the house to pay for two plane tickets and the fee for her girlfriend's gender confirmation surgery, leaving him on his own. He packed up his computer, dropped out of high school and took a variety of odd jobs, finally settling on a Volkswagen repair shop."

Loved the first one, but haven't played it in many years. I wasn't able to get into the second. I think it was the second level where I got stuck on this ridiculously fiddly platform section that I was never able to get past, because I ended up with nasty motion sickness every time I attempted it.

Motion sickness really fucks up my entertainment options. The last fps I was able to finish was The Darkness 2. Which came out eleven years ago. Shit sucks.

One thing that stood out for me with the original Alice was it had pretty excellent mouse and keyboard controls. At the time, it seemed like a lot third person games on the PC were crappy Playstation ports and they didn't really bother adapting the controls to the FPS-style mouse and keyboard controls.

American McGee is definitely a character.
Certainly is. This tweet from Scott Host (creator of the shareware DOS game Raptor) about McGee's girlfriend hitting on Carmack is pretty funny: https://twitter.com/echoLogin/status/1656027522889334790 (Archive). The implication seems McGee was getting his girlfriend to try and fuck Carmack for a job at id.

Only today did I find out that USA McGee is a massive chinasimp.
What a shame.
I've seen some of his tweets about China. Could understand if he was simply being defensive of the Chinese people. After all he has a Chinese wife and has lived in the country for many years. But he actually seems to believe CCP propaganda and willingly spread it on Twitter.

These two games are really good the fact that EA wouldn't fund the 3 games makes me very sad. It was really nice to see a 3d platformer that didn't look like it was made for children. Hell it's nice in general to see a good 3d platformer that isn't Mario.

What's your definition of a "good" non-mario 3D platformer, because 3D platformers were a-plenty in the late 90's / early 200s, so it's not like there weren't much variety

I like Banjo Kazooie, Psychonauts and some of the other ones that came out during that time period. What I meant by that is by the time the second game Alice Returns came out 3D platformer weren't really being made anymore outside of Mario. Alice Returns came out after most of those classic 3D platformers were already released and even a little bit old. Maybe it's just me but the early 2010s seem to not have that many 3D platformers.

Did McGee officially retire? I thought he was actively petitioning to get the rights to make a sequel, creating art books of it and everything?
Wasn't there supposed to be a TV show? It's a shame if it ends like this.
Reminds me how the No One Lives Forever games died, apparently nobody even knows who owns the rights to those.
For all the talk about diversity the industry does a shit job supporting it where it already existed.

What happened to that "ALICE: ASYLUM" crowdfunded project he was still working on last I checked? He was a massive china simp and probably was just milking the kickstarter and counting the days to retirement. 10 years? Really?

EA backed out of publishing it and there's nothing McGee can do because they still own the rights to the IP. They claimed that Alice: Asylum "didn't fit well with their current releases". EA also hasn't made any indication that they would be willing to sell the rights to McGee so that a different publisher could pick it up.

I played some of the first game and liked it enough. The second game was a step up all around.
It's too bad Asylum has been summarily snuffed out. I would love to see more of this series.

One of us should take one for the team: get a job at EA, climb the hierarchy until you're in a position to get Asylum made. Gaming: Made Great Again
