I was thinking. What was the best year for vidya ever?

For me, I'm thinking 1998. You google "1998 in gaming" and the number of titles thrown up by this are astounding in how wide a cross section of genres they encompass, and how genre defining or long lasting they have been, and the level of innovation on offer:

- Half Life (did System Shock better than System Shock)
- Starcraft (still tournament RTS of choice)
- Baldur's Gate (the tactical party RPG was dead, dead I tell you, then this came along, and had mega writing to boot)
- Battlezone 98 (a tank commander is you, ON THE MOON)
- Unreal (proved that even boomer shooters could have atmosphere)
- Fallout 2 (the best Fallout game, no argument)
- Grim Fandango (very funny and bittersweet adventure that works with rather than bounces off the polygon ceiling)
- FUCKING ALPHA CENTAURI (please don't go, the drones need you, they look up to you)
- Dark Reign (the first RTS where the AI actually tries to fucking murder you)
- Need for Speed III (the best of the first gen Need for Speed games)
- FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 (the best sportsball game of all time, ever, it was downhill all the way from here)

Any other candidates?

Depends on your generation I suppose.

1998 vs 1992 has been the great debate for years now. I think 1992 was better because pinball and arcade had some massive hits that year as well.

Reactions: The Last Stand
2007. It had:

Halo 3
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
Rock Band
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
Portal
Bioshock
Super Mario Galaxy
Team Fortress 2
and the greatest video game of all time:
Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga
You make me sad by not including Prime 3. It has SkyTown.

>Not listing Dance Dance Revolution as one of the best things to come out of 1998
How dare you OP!!

2005. Battlefield II, Resident Evil 4, Destroy All Humans, Shadow of the Colossus. Need I say more?

The 2000s in general was the best decade for gaming. Technology had advanced to the point where games were (with some graphical improvements aside) as good as they are now, but before companies got greedy and started indulging in every shady, money-grubbing tactic imaginable.
