How the fuck does the Dude even keep the lights on? If he's unemployed, how's he even getting by? I've seen no evidence of him being disabled or a welfare scammer in the movie. He's gotta pay the bills somehow!

Better question, how does the Dude own a house, a car, gas for that car, money for milk, bathrobes, bowling balls. I mean the list goes fucking on.

The best answer is to just not question it. The Dude abides.

My guess the Dude has some form of employment off screen. It was never relevant to the story, so wasn't included.

I think the Dude mentions he's unemployed at one point in the movie.

(shrugs) For all we know he is a Nam vet and suffered some disability himself. His own little tugboat. Maybe his parents died and he's living off the inheritance. Don't know, don't care.

So, what does everyone think of the idea that Donny is part of Walter's imagination? I, myself, think the Stranger is part of the Dude's imagination.

Forget it. The whole movie was just an acid flashback.

The Dude's not a 'Nam vet. They clearly stated that he was in college during the war. He spent much of his college years "occupying various administration buildings and smoking a lot of Thai stick". WALTER fought in 'Nam.

GLORIA, AUGUSTA!
