Unironically git gud and stay rested. But yeah the dice roll mechanic is somewhat bullshit.
I don't think it's the mechanic itself that bothers people. That sort of thing was typical of CRPGs at the time. Too many games to start listing. Morrowind was different than those games because it's first person, it's awkward to see your character through his eyes stab someone in the face and nothing happens. People don't complain about the same thing in, say, the classic Baldur's Gate games.

This is actually one of the things I appreciate the most about Morrowind. I like the first person open world, but by definition an RPG isnt an RPG is you arent rolling dice.

The fact that Morrowind used 3D models didn't help. It was tolerable when your hand was a 2D sprite swiping against another 2D sprite and there was no sense of depth or contact.

I think a good compromise would be to have a chance for glancing or indirect hits that deal less damage, as opposed to outright missing, kind of like a reverse critical hit with some kind of accompanying sound effect. I think people are more forgiving for random failure as long as some damage is getting done.

I've toyed around with the idea of a Skyrim mod that would add glancing hits calculated based off of weapon skill vs armor rating; so a heavily armored character deflects more blows than a lightly armored character, but a skilled fighter should still be hitting directly most of the time. You would probably need to balance out the benefit by reducing the amount of direct damage reduction armor rating provides. Personally, I like the idea that heavy armor allows the player to ignore or deflect away weaker enemies making it better against a mob of bandits, but won't do as much against a master swordsman who can find weak points. Then further balance heavy armor with higher stamina costs, so a lightly armored character can win through better movement and attrition.

On the topic of hit chance, I like this mod that makes accuracy with a bow and arrow dependent on actually having a good Archery skill (by default just to NPCs but you can have it apply to the player as well). I think there's a lot of ways to reimplement RPG mechanics into an action style game if you tried, but the problem is combining the two will inevitably limit your audience both from action players who don't want to deal with hit chance, and RPG players who don't want to deal with fast-paced combat, can't really blame them in that sense.

That's part of it, but the other half is the feedback you get for whiffs and glancing blows. I think that the trannies at Skywind, before just going to out-of-the-box Skyrim combat, were trying out having sparks, like your sword was just scraping the enemy's armor, showing misses that I thought was a decent way to make the player understand why no damage was being done.

Did they ever explain why they didn't go with it? Granted I think Morrowind with Skyrim mechanics is a terrible idea from the outset but if they're outright ignoring the original combat system, I have to wonder who the mod even exists for.
The obvious problem is that not all your enemies will be wearing armor. I can't think of a good way around the issue.
A clang or thud sound effect would be fine for me. At least in the system I proposed, the chances of an unarmored character deflecting a blow would be pretty low, so in the rare event that a player hears a clang it can be rationalised as them dodging. Alternatively, just have a blood splatter on direct hit, and no blood on a glancing blow.

Is it just me, or does your system not factor in agility at all?

As I said, my initial post was a previous idea I had for a Skyrim mod, so Agility wouldn't exist. Not saying I think stats shouldn't exist, but I'm trying to think of the most realistic possible way to make a system that combines the two games.
I'd love to see a mod add more active/physics based combat to Morrowind, but it doesn't seem likely to happen any time soon (there is a Lua physics mod for OpenMW but it's pretty minimal, it only adds janky physics to droppable objects, not actors, and the closest thing to more active melee combat I've seen is Solthas' combat, which is good but not really the same thing). So the most realistic solution I can think of, is trying to add more numbers-based mechanics to Skyrim.
Are we talking about Morrowind, or how your theoretical mod/game would work

I said it in the very same sentence you quoted, man.

I wonder if Morrowind were to be rebuilt in Unity, more foundational changes could be made to the game than with OpenMW. If the more physics-heavy combat system mods would become feasible. If someone ever takes that on, I really hope they don't wipe out dice rolls.

I’ve oscillated in feelings toward the dice roll system in Morrowind. At first, I hated it; then I loved it; now it’s tedious, especially with blighted creatures where I have a chance for my carry weight to go down to 0.

I recently bought BG3 and I don’t know if literally rolling a dice is better or not.

doubleposting because edit time is over but jeettube recommended me this video:
https://youtube.com/watch?v=LclpmsXAfnwhe has a overall nice take for skyrim and if you wish to see it through a more casual lens because he is a bong and all, good background noise.

also i got another recommendation:

he is not wrong btw.
They removed Mysticism in Skyrim so adding in the Gunnery school of magic is is only fair.

Micky D seems to be reversing course all the tranny shit from his bio is gone.
He doesn't have a Discord as far as I'm aware so he doesn't have a system in place which constantly reaffirms the delusion.

Depending on the type, a tranny's tranny identity will gradually deteriorate to the point they become half-arsed about maintaining it or they just abandon it altogether.

For girls they're more likely to become trannies as a combination of depression and dysphoria. The test makes their mood decline further and they're more likely to detransition as a result. For men, it is more frequently a result of fetishism and oestrogen has a mood-lifting effect so they correlate their heightened mood to their transition rather than the fact they're taking literal happy pills and become less likely to detransition. However, the increased likelihood of doesn't discount men who transition as a result of low-mood and dysphoria, which he already displayed signs of given he was open about his fear of growing old.

He "transitioned" but likely didn't go as far as getting on oestrogen and such so when his mood remained low, he might've finally arrived at the realisation that growing his hair long and referring to himself as "she" isn't going to fix any of his problems. He is very likely a depressed bisexual, with his depression coming from aging, which is rather common in men. I'd actually say he's at risk of committing suicide unless he's privately gotten over his fear of aging, which his dropping of tranny shit might be indicative of.

He's currently playing a lot of old games he's nostalgic over which could reinforce his fear of aging (because it's tactic acknowledgement he's getting old) or his attempt to retain his youth by living through it again which is a margininally better coping mechanism than skinwalking a younger, female version of himself.

I did legit think we were going to see a new trailer in June too. Am I crazy in thinking of Bethesda culled itself back under 200 employees, game development would pick up?

By the time TES VI comes out it's going to feel so dated, both the game engine and the writing. By 2029 woke shit will be beyond dead and it's going to be full of it. You know Bethesda can't help themselves when they set the game in Niggerfell.

Unless Todd wants to vindicate Redguard.
The guy who voiced Cyrus hasn't been in anything for a decade now so it's possible Todd has him locked up somewhere at Bethesda HQ just voicing the ever expanding script Elder Scrolls: Redguard 2 Hammerfell. It's going to be his magnum opus. Fallout 76 and Starfield were heaps of trash, sacrificial lambs to absorb all the shit just so we can say N'gasta loudly and proudly.
