The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

I like how Godzilla's atomic breath has evolved over the decades to, basically, its final form in Japan's new era of films featuring the character. During the Showa period, it was part of his arsenal that he didn't use too much as his fights were physical for the most part. This was the complete opposite in the Heisei movies with Godzilla spamming his breath constantly since most of his opponents, either man-made or other monsters, weren't ones that could match him physically. The Millennium era went back to balancing the atomic breath with monster brawls although GMK was the precursor of Godzilla's special move becoming a WMD when his first use of it had both a charge up and mushroom cloud afterwards. Now with Shin, the Netflix anime trilogy, and Minus One, the breath became a "holy shit" moment for both the characters and the audience.

Reminds me of Matt Frank sperging out and lashing out at Godzilla fans for liking Minus One over The Marvels.
The same fan who buy your art work which is mainly Godzilla related.
I really do love how people rejecting MCU slop and embracing Godzilla has broken so many soyboy's minds.
Anyone got a link to this? I haven't followed the reception to Minus One, but I love me some soyboy rage and Google isn't showing me anything.

Have you guys picked up any of the Monster Series figures from the Godzilla store? Some of them are pretty good (Bagan the final boss in one of the SNES games, Varan) while others are...meh (Rose Biollante). One autistic gripe I have is they really half-assed some parts of the figures like Varan's spikes (some are white, others aren't even painted), but other than that I like what I got from the Godzilla store. Here's hoping they'll release figures of lesser known monsters like Maguma and Gezora.

I knew it was going to be a woke piece of shit from the get-go, and Hammerhand warned people after watching some of the episodes. The Western Godzilla series (because fuck that gay Monsterverse name) never learned from their lesson that you're supposed to show the monster wrecking shit and kicking ass, not girlboss lesbians that will make you want to punch them. I can't take this series seriously, and I tried to like Godzilla: KoTM (I skipped Godzilla vs. Kong when I boycotted anything from Hollywood).

Matt McMuscles is seething and coping over Minus One getting more praise than typical Hollywood slop:
Why am I not surprised? The guy is kind of a sjw cuck with shitty taste in fighting games.

I bought the Little Godzilla (I'm a Godzilla Jr. stan) and I also purchased the Minus One Goji (Odo Island version) imported from Japan. I think most of the figures are pretty cool, some are remakes of classic figures, which I am lucky to own a couple of, for an affordable price. The only gripe I have is the detail and paint jobs aren't up to usual Bandai par but for the price I can't complain. Will probably buy some more. The Bagan is on my list. Love the lesser known kaiju as well. The Super 7 Toho Ultimates Heisei Rose form Biollante is pretty cool. It's about 90-110usd, and I think it looks so badass. I just purchased the Super 7 1200 degrees Celsius Godzilla figure, which I am super impressed with. They are killing it IMO.

I'm waiting for the Strawberry-Choco Hedorah, which is supposed to get shipped at the end of January. It's tempting to get all of the various Hedorahs, but I'm just going to wait for a Maguma and Gezora release. If they make an Orochi, I'll grab that.

Watched Godzilla Minus One. I thought it was pretty good, but kinda slow. It took awhile to get to the city smashing goodness, but once we got there holy shit Godzilla was terrifying. Absolutely fucked the shit out of the city with a single atomic breath blast. Even before the impact and explosion buildings around the blast were just disintegrating.

You really get a sense of how absurdly powerful the monster is when his breath blasts are outright doing nuclear weapons level damage with mushroom clouds and shockwaves, giant battleship guns barely phase him, and he's so absolutely large and in charge that individual humans mean fuckall to him and aren't even worth targeting as they run away completely beneath his notice.

Godzilla Minus One is re-airing next week, this time in black and white.
I'm going again, lads.
I'm so hype to see Minus One Minus Color, I just hope the one AMC near me will play it. It will be my third time if so. It's the only movie last year that made me actually want to go to the theatre.

I want them in suits again, do they wear kaiju suits in minus one? Is it any good etc?
All CGI.
Honestly suits are still used in commercials and shorts (like the one where Jet jaguar fights Final Wars Goji) but I think Toho knows that suits are too limited for whatever visions the newer Godzilla movies have.
Also Minus One is amazing. Some people dislike the ending but I liked it.

Super 7's upcoming Minus One Godzilla looks excellent. I was originally planning on getting the SH Monsterarts version but it was way too fucking expensive. Super 7's looks better while being nearly half the price.

There are practical effects. There is one scene with Godzilla chasing a boat that I'm convinced is a puppet head or something and the boat is definitley a prop.. I love that scene. But nobody is in suits, Godzilla is CGI. (He looks so badass)

I'm glad you didn't go for the SH MonsterArts version. The Super 7 one looks much much better than the monsterarts. They got lazy, and it shows in a lot of their figures. I bought the 9.6" Bandai Vinyl Minus Goji, because I needed it then lol. Not to scale but looks cool next to the Odo Island form Goji. I will most likely be buying the Super 7 one as well. I really really want their Destroyah. Speaking of SH I did preorder the new Spacegodzilla that comes out this Summer. He looks pretty amazing. Hiya toys has also been coming out with some good shit, They just released a Legendary King Ghidorah that looks so badass next to the SH one and was like 110 before shipping and tax.

It's a mixture of practical and CG effects, and even then Godzilla looked horrifying, brutal and yet amazing. The movie is also outstanding. For me, one of the top three best movies of 2023 and one of the top three best Godzilla movies

I'm wondering how things would be if they did make that Godzilla 1994 movie instead of scrapping it, De Bont just lowers the budget.

Maybe if made back in 94 it would have sequels and Emmerich makes his asteroid movie, only everyone rags on him for making another Deep Impact or Armageddon. Or they ask him to make a Godzilla sequel, and everyone disses him for copying the first movie with cooler effects. And for putting expies of Siskel and Ebert and putting too many Jurassic Park references.

The Godzilla film series is so vast that even the ones that didn't get made are fascinating.

The 1994 film is one of the great what-ifs. Everything points to it being solid and entertaining, at least better than the 1998 film.

Except Emmerich initially never wanted to make a Godzilla movie and was hoping to continue on with two more Stargate movie sequels (the latter two would end up being retooled as a SG-1 TV show for Showtime and Syfy). He was a director for hire just a month before Independence Day was even released resulting a complete rush job filming and also a rudimentary creature design that would ended up being approved anyway. It's a shitty movie but with a very interesting production history for sure, and Emmerich has since then regrets making it. Though, he did make 10,000 BC and such so I don't know what to think
