Don't worry, they're having a sale on Maxtor drives at Costco!Backups didn't exist in 1999. We just prayed the drive would last until we could afford a new one.
Backups were actually better. Shit like DATs and mini-DATs were common. Now outside of an industrial setting you barely have any choices other than using other hard drives, trash like optical media, etc. It used to be a snap to set up a tape backup with total and incremental backups. You can still get those but not at any reasonable price.Backups didn't exist in 1999. We just prayed the drive would last until we could afford a new one.
The first ones are just hilarious, but the last one does make you wonder. However, GNOME's own press release (A) answers that one:
- Why did the GNOME Foundation not mention their Executive Director's primary passion and work experience as a shaman? Is the GNOME Foundation ashamed of shamanism?
- What aspect of shamanism was most needed within the role of the Executive Director?
- How will shamanism be incorporated into future GNOME releases?
- Will ayahuasca be used at future GNOME conferences or during future UI design?
- How, exactly, did GNOME find Holly Million during their search for a new Executive Director?
Holly’s unique blend of passion for empowering individuals and organizations and depth of experience fundraising at a diverse set of non-profits is precisely what the GNOME Foundation is looking for as we enter this new chapter.
Oh yes, non-profits are notorious for just giving away money with no strings attached whatsoever. Fun times ahead.“I am impressed by the international reach of the GNOME community and the diversity of the individuals involved in creating all of this amazing output. Together, you have created something so powerful that can be further harnessed to create even more social benefit.”
—Holly Million
GNOME Foundation Executive Director
Holly can try and summon the spirit of Steve Jobs from AIDS hell so he can tell their devs they've made a shitty MacOS pastiche.I create rituals and ceremonies to bring the sacred into people’s lives.
OK, if they make GNOME the first official Shamanic Linux DE, they've got me on board.I train emerging shamans and those who want to bring shamanic techniques into their daily lives for pleasure and empowerment.
GNOME Foundation hires "Professional Shaman" as new Executive Director (A) Lunduke does what Kiwifarms don't, apparently.
To be fair I'm not sure I'd want a senior Admech borg in charge of my cogitator interface. This is so stupid. It's a software development project, they need a Tech Priest or a Enginseer not a shaman.
Yeah, fucking around with hardware RAID is probably a bad idea for a home setup.Backups were actually better. Shit like DATs and mini-DATs were common. Now outside of an industrial setting you barely have any choices other than using other hard drives, trash like optical media, etc. It used to be a snap to set up a tape backup with total and incremental backups. You can still get those but not at any reasonable price.
Now one of your best bets is operating out of a data center and having RAID, but as we just saw recently with the Farms, literally the entire RAID can simultaneously fail and you're fucked.
So GNOME is basically now Aztechnology. I didn't have "Shadowrun coming true" on my 2023 bingo card. This is so stupid. It's a software development project, they need a Tech Priest or a Enginseer not a shaman.
The absolute fucking way. Hardware RAID kind of sucks these days, and it dies you have to go find the same card, and.... Yeah..
I originally read this as "a broom of witchcraft" and it gave me a good chuckle.I will laugh my ass off if this inspires a boom of witchcraft themed projects in the near future.
Can't expect less than utter shit from a project with a fucking foot for a logo, solidified by their decision to pronounce it as "guh-NOME". The only decision those troglodytes should be allowed to make is exile or ritual suicide.Gnome is shit though. It keeps on spawning new forks of their DE because it's so bad
I'm no ZFS guy, but I've been using LVM with RAID6 for over a decade now. Same deal. I've watched drives fail, messed with them as they fail, then replaced them after I get too irritated. Effortless, without data loss.Yeah, fucking around with hardware RAID is probably a bad idea for a home setup.
Used to run FreeNAS but wanted Docker as well on the same server. Ended up just migrating to Debain then installing ZFS for it, ran a zfs import command. It worked like a charm, import was smooth as could be, you don't get a fancy webgui, but I'd rather do 99% of things via cli anyways.
RAID6 is almost a must with 8gb+ drives. There is a non-zero chance that another drive fails while reslivering and reslivering is going to put some wear on your drives. The fact you can get 20tb+ drives now, it would be stressful reslivering a full pool without an LTO backup or another local backup.Things really are less simple nowadays with these large drives. I think there's probably a lot of people who realize what a pain in the ass it is to do proper backups, so they think "well, what are the chances...?"
