weren't a lot of stable options

twm and Fvwm would like a word.
Not a fan of the CDE look personally, but luckily that's just one option.

Admittedly I've been pretty happy with my lightweight Xfce. One top bar and standard decorations.
Sometimes I even set the background to not-quite-black instead of black for a touch of class.

If an attacker gets access to a user who can either `doas`, `sudo` or `run0`, you're fucked anyway, so who does it even protect to use sudo instead of just switching to root for your commands?
sudo allows for more granularity because you can specify exactly which commands users are able run with root privileges. If they need to run something as root as part of their work you can give them the ability to do that without letting them have full root access.

Obviously this isn't a feature you'd need on a single-user system

Thanks for listening.
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little proprietry bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the FSF, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Apple patents, and I have over 300 confirmed bug fixes. I am trained in Free Software Evangelizing and I'm the top code contributer for the entire GNU HURD. You are nothing to me but just another compile time error. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am building a GUI using GTK+ and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can decompile you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my Model M. Not only am I extensively trained in EMACS, but I have access to the entire arsenal of LISP functions and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit Freedom all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking debugged, kiddo.

Oh really, the shit that nearly caused a civil war in Debian?
It's not who votes that matters, but who counts the votes.
Which is why the Gentoo crowd moved to doas. (At least I did - I never had any problems with it ever since.)
Gentoo devs make some what I would call interesting choices. When firefox was pulseaudio only on compilem they retained an old ass version (58 ) for alsa users forever until now you could set a useflag for native alsa support. Personally, it's decisions like these that makes me like Gentoo.
systemd just is flat out better
It's easier. There's a reason compile distros like Gentoo contains systemd, openrc, runit, s6, sysvinit, and et al. The person whose going to spend the time to optimize the fuck out of their system that would for the average person be not worth it on the cost/benefit analysis is the reason gentoo has init systems to select from.

Yeah, but also Gentoo has no expectations of support, or, honestly even working correctly. You're on your own whatever the fuck you decide to do.

On something like Debian expecting package maintainers to keep up install scripts for six different init systems would turn into hell.
