Retards on reddit made Hyperland a bigger deal than it really was. When i still used Discord, I went to the Hyperland discord and everyone there seemed to be not so transphobic.

The vaxry situtation was funny. Drew devault aka jew segfault (creator of sway/wlroots) complained about transphobia in hyprland discord (not even from vaxry but another moderator) and drew made an issue in hyprland github saying that hyprland should add a code of conduct. As a result vaxry bans everybody that says anything offensive in the discord and doesn't allow new users to post and added a code of conduct. In the end, drew still wasn't happy and attacked vaxry and then later vaxry gets banned from contributing to freedesktop projects.
Vaxry was dumb for complying. He earned nothing as a result.

true, I've got a 1070 in my server that encodes jellyfin streams and it's done incredibly well. the driver had a heart attack a few times for the first few months, but manually restarting it got it up and running again. (and even then the issue hasn't happened since, i have my server auto update itself and i suspect it just was a driver bug that got fixed later)
i haven't used amd graphics extensively on linux but I've heard though the grape vine that its ok but not polished in some areas. honestly I'm begrudgingly gonna stick with nvidia, I've had good experiences with them in the past. maybe on a secondary computer I'll try amd or intel's ark if I'm interested and have the spare cash.
(hell, i could try and run them on xp, onecore api allows for newer devices and drivers to be installed, could be a fun adventure.)

If it helps, I have a 3080rtx and have had no problems. Run the proprietary drivers. Wayland was a bit fucky last time I tried it and I think it will be worse if I tried now as not only do I have multiple monitors but different sizes and refresh rates. I’ll try it tomorrow. For science.

He did make a CoC but it wasn't what Drew wanted. And if you read that GitHub thread, you can see devault sperging and saying he was going to make a complaint and get vaxry kicked out of the free desktop foundation. Which of course ended up happening. I had a good laugh seeing how petty what he was mad about. Especially that thread. He got butthurt over literally nothing. Tbh. I still believe it was more motivated over jealousy. Because people did, and still do like hyrprland more than sway.

That works fine now on nvidia if you have up to date drivers. Even vrr with multiple monitors on wayland should work now.

because old impressions have a long shelf life (especially when it comes to tech).
for the longest time it was ass, or at least annoying to get working. even more when linux gained traction for gaming. but you don't have to believe me...

unless you want to play the latest AAA stuff you don't really need bleeding edge. for starting out I'd pick something more "accessible" like mint or pop (never used that one myself tho).
there will be stuff that breaks and works differently than expected, stuff you need to get used to before settling in, so I wouldn't sweat the first weeks/months and rather pick something more simple.
arch-based works fine and there's plenty of documentation to figure stuff out, it depends how willing you are to scale the cliff of learning.

in the end it's all more or less the same, think of it as different modpacks for skyrim that still all run on skyrim. besides minor differences all that knowledge is transferable.

Arch is orientated towards people who like using Arch, god bless em. You don't need that for your first experience with Linux.

Nvidia is fine on linux. I don't know where the meme comes from that you should use amd instead. I have used both on linux and amd honestly has more issues than nvidia (just like on windows). You also cant use hdmi 2.1 with amd so if you want to use a high resolution high refresh rate monitor then it wont work properly (unless you use a displayport to hdmi adapter which breaks variable refresh rate and can cause some other issues).

Nvidia's Linux driver used to be absolute garbage for anything but CUDA (since a lot of Linux+Nvidia use at the time really was just servers that used CUDA as an accelerator). AMD's Linux driver on the other hand worked relatively smoothly, and was generally preinstalled as part of the kernel.
Nvidia's current Linux driver is fine. It's not usually preinstalled, because it's licensed differently, but it now uses the same open interfaces the AMD driver does, so it works just as well (and arguably better in some cases, since Nvidia does generally put more polish into their drivers than AMD). Since it can be a bit of a hassle running CUDA or pytorch on AMD, and Nvidia cards perform so much better in general, and DLSS is so much better than FSR, I've switched to recommending Nvidia on Linux and Windows both. Two years ago I was very strongly in favour of AMD-only on Linux, but that's changed.
