Yeah. The same thing annoys me when I use void. Nearly every time I build something from source I end up having a number of dev packages I need to install.
 
Debian followed RedHat's lead with their -devel packages, didn't they? So we can safely blame RedHat for all this bullshit?

Debian released first, but you'd have to look at the package lists of the time to see who came up with the package layout first.

No -dev packages in Debian 1.3.1, released 1997, -dev packages in Debian 2, which released in 1998. -devel packages in Red Hat Linux 4, which was released in 1996. So yeah.

Worst thing about gimp is the ass simplified interface icons which are harder to discern, but gimp is neither the first nor last app to use shitty simplified flat icons and the devs' obsession with not adding a fucking shape tool when even fucking mspaint has one.

Yeah, it really seems that GIMP is one of those linux programs that a windows user can just intuitivly... use. Krita, Kdenlive, libreoffice. It's not that linux devs can't do proper UI, it's more that they most of the time do not have an incentive to. The big reason why there's genuine effort put into user friendliness,is because it's also marketed as a free alternative to photoshop on windows, and, unlike on linux, you are not, infact, expected to have end stage autism, be terminally online and also a smartass in computer sciences to use windows.

I love it when linux users being up all these problems with windows, and it's some shit no one gives a shit about or is fixed with a restart.

I'll let you in on a secret: no one gives a shit about bloat. Not in a world where boot time is >1 min, programs opening are >15 seconds, and you can buy an extra 1TB hard drive for like 50$. These things would have to he 10x the issue for anyone to even care.

They do care when they get flat out told a perihperal they bought or a program the want to use needs flat out doesn't work unless they start digging into command lines they don't understand, and even then they should flip a coin. That greentext about gimp in the college class is too accurate. I could learn the CLI eventually, but do I want to worry about it while downloading zoom in the middle of a college lecture, some propietary software while working at a job, or be the one friend in the group that can't play redout 2 while epic games is letting people play it for free? I have a life outside the computer, and I don't want it getting in my way while I am trying to live it.

unless you're using the wrong math symbols, i think most people would be annoyed if it took over a minute for their computer to boot and over fifteen seconds for a program to launch
 
I thought this argument was about Mac computers, Windows breaks and doesn't work all the time too tbf

This is also true, after being frustrated with having to constantly fix my grandmas win10 installation I changed her over to mint. She likes it better and actually hasn't been able to break it yet even though it was maybe 2 years ago!
 
Is there a way to config emacs to enter wdired instead of dired by default? I don't think I ever used the directory editor and not wanted to edit the directory. But then, what I am currently doing is stripping extra chars from the name (Why is the filename for almost all songs I download "<Artist> - <Album> - <Track Id> <Song>"?? All of that is in the metadata...) So maybe I could just write a script that looks for the last pattern of "- \d\d " on a given line and strip it and everything before it.

Edit: for the regex renaming thing, there already exists a rename command, so that's that lol.

Krita is late stage homosexual and overrated. I use Fire Alpaca and Paint.net to draw and Gimp to edit.

I don't even want to defend Gimp because it is the typical GNU UI/UX autism that I fucking hate about linux and FOSS projects like it, Krita, Inkscape, LMMS and Blender (well not anymore), but you give me no choice there broski. Gimp has a legit use esp when I tried out Linux for the first time I obviously couldn't install Fire Alpaca and Paint.net on it, so I used the factory default drawing app and it is powerful enough to be worth learning. Why do you bring up random weeks old comments anyways?

my android tablet has 64gb of space, 23gb is taken up by "the os" (i.e Android and whatever preloaded app came with the damn thing that you don't want and can't uninstall.)
thats bloat, shit you don't want, that you can't remove, taking up space. every main stream device I've dealt with has bloat. (removable or not)
it does slow shit down, if you're trying to get work done, having to wait 15 seconds each time you open a new program adds up. even your argument for getting more storage is laughably stupid.
if bloat didn't exist, you'd be able to store more of what YOU want and not have to pay an extra $50 for more storage that should've been accessible to in the first place.
every person I've every talked to about this, hates bloat. every one. i don't care if i get top hatted, go stick a large wooden spike up your arse and die on it.
