Counterpoint: PC gamers are fully capable of installing Linux mint because they are competent enough to install windows from a USB
I know most people are tech illiterate but I'm talking about people who can and do brag about building their own custom pc
And I'm talking about Grandma Fanny-Mae who still vaguely thinks she's on Windows 95. One of the demographics that Linux Mint tries to support.

a permasiteban for me would make the entire forum better actually

I see Linux users are still making the same mistake by assuming their common knowledge is everyone's common knowledge.
I try to dumb myself down extremely when talking about computer linguistics.

reinforcing another Linux stereotype that it's userbase is toxic and hateful towards anyone who doesn't use Linux.
Is it a stereotype if it's true?

PC gamers are fully capable of installing Linux Mint because they are competent enough to install Windows from a USB-drive. I know most people are tech-illiterate but I'm talking about people who can- and do brag about building their own custom PC.
(Grammar fixed because that was a pain to read.)
Are they though? I have people who are serious dumb cunts when it comes to computers even though they've made their own computer. Making computers, that is, installing components, has become easier than ever with guides helping with every step of the progress. I have friends who can build their own computers but they cannot, for the life of them, know which components are the best, if an Intel CPU fits inside of an AMD socket or if a certain power supply fits their needs. Most people building computers just use lists made from Mister Tech Tips or certain others and take it as gospel. Such as Twitch streamers, fucking streamers who sit on their ass all day doing literally nothing, buying 4090's because "it's the best", because they don't know any better. They don't know its power usage, its horrific power melting cables, NVIDIA's unstable drivers, et cetera. They wouldn't know how to follow a guide if it's not Windows because Windows is uniform and Linux distro's aren't. Give them a powershell window and they'd be terrified. Out of my three friends who made their own computer and bought their own components, only one so far has even tried out to install a Linux distro on their own, because they were fed up with their shitty Surface Laptop being slow as shit with Windows. He continually asks me for help because he's continually nervous about doing anything major, which I can see as a reasonable fear. You can't easily nuke your Windows install, but you can your Linux install. Think of the majority of people as being absolutely, brain-rottingly retarded, and if you can't make your things so easy that a gigantic retard could do them, you've fucked up.

He's personally annoying Null and had an unhinged shitfit that earned him his first thread ban, then repeats himself.

Dude once turned his avatar solid black because he melted down like a Discord teenager over being told to stop acting obnoxious.

There's already a thread for the Free & Open Source Software community, absolutely zero fucking excuse to be shitting up this thread lamenting about Linux users nonstop. At some point one needs to look in the mirror and say "If everyone is the problem and I'm not, I'm part of the problem".

There are people a million times worse than my Slav. If you can't see the fun in Slav's posts, you have no fun in anything. You have a free lolcow, free to milk, and you complain. He's not providing low-quality, one-word posts but long-written spergfests, enjoyable for all. Let the man sperg.

I have a idea for a operating system.

lets use btrfs and lets also make the operating FILL the shit with files EVERYWHERE to the point to where there are MILLIONS of files on your rootfs
1766522916600.png
Lest then make everyone use Containers for everything and REMOVE the package manager so you cant install packages unless you have the .RPM file. Filling up your files to the point of there being MILLIONS
1766523304721.png
1766523407704.png
Lets do that to the point to where you eventually reach a HARD FILE LIMIT ON BTRFS AND MAKE YOUR SYSTEM SOFT BRICKED NOT BECAUSE YOUR OUT OF SPACE BUT BECAUSE YOU RAN OUT OF FILES
1766523512460.png
To make this happen even sooner lets also ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO USE CONTAINERS OVER SIMPLE APPIMAGES AND SAY THAT INSTALLING A ENTIRE CONTAINER IS RECOMMENDED OVER USING A APP-IMAGE TO SIMPLE BEGINNERS
1766524017330.png
Lets then BAN anyone who mentions this problem of there system NO LONGER WORKING and having other bugs that PHSYICALLY WEAR DOWN YOUR SSD BY TERABYTES even if its in a calm and respectful manner on our fourm.
1766523675752.png
Lets then make it "immutable" meaning that your packages get uninstalled EVERY UPDATE unless your using high level flatshits And lets also make it so that you have to RESTART YOUR SYSTEM TO INSTALL A PACKAGE
1766524132152.png
Lets then market this at BEGINNERS AND BAN ANYONE ON OUR DISCORD FOR LITTERALLY ANYTHING TO THE POINT TO WHERE IVE GONE THROUGH 8 DIFFERENT EMIALS JUST TO BAN EVADE SO I CAN ASK A SIMPLE QUESTION BECAUSE THEY BAN YOU FOR ANYTHING AND I JUST NEED HELP.

I mentioned this very thing is the Schrodinger's Four-Way Best Practices.

I tinkered with a bootc image around the time Fedora 42 came out with a btrfs mounting error that wasn't fixed and probably still isn't.

It cannot be fixed with the cloud native approach.

Locally fucking around with the files requires committing the tree again, defeating the pros of the cloud-native atomic model.

You can create something similar and superior with Arch Linux and its ArchInstall script without the atomic part and being a lot closer to OpenSUSE with btrfs+snapper (snapper provides readonly snapshots to boot from GRUB), distrobox, and flatpak managed through Discover. KDE because GNOME fucking SUCKS. The "atomic" part just means modeling the rootfs after House of Leaves. Really, take a look at the commit tree directories for ostree, it's bonkers.

It's crazy to think we couldn't just leverage Snapper for an create anti-retard bumper mode to boot into.

tbh i think the only thing stopping widespread linux adoption is you have to actually know what youre looking for to buy a computer with desktop linux on it
if you actually ordered your grandma a framework laptop she'd adapt very quickly to it. i've done that to countless boomers, just gave them a computer with linux mint on it and within minutes they were surfing the web and doing all their daily tasks. they didn't get a choice in operating system. i said 11 isn't gonna fly on this computer so you get linux or you get nothing, and they figured it out very quickly.
the exception to this was i had this one boomer who i was selling a laptop running windows 10 to, back when 10 was current. i started getting calls from him asking how to type an @ and he kept calling his neighbor who would call me
eventually i had to just buy the laptop back from him because he kept asking for a laptop running windows 8, which was so out of date you couldn't do basic web surfing.

yeah if you assembled your own pc and then failed at installing windows you failed to build a pc. you got to the last step, which was installing the OS and getting it to boot, and gave up there
i know people wanna say linux users have a wealth of knowledge and cannot comprehend the mind of a pc gamer who does not know anything except windows, but what's there to get stuck on if you give a pc gamer a steam deck? linux has actually reached the point of "a monkey can figure this out" which is ironically something i cannot say about windows anymore

If you're unable to watch a YouTube video explaining how to install a new OS you're too stupid.
Youtube is a last resort, it really sucks for getting information because it is completely serialized, and I wouldn't blame someone for not being able to put up with it. But a wiki article or even a docsify site is way more comfortable due to you being able to peek away from the current context, and thankfully a lot of the distros have a decent documentation or wiki.
Nowadays they are trying to shut those down and instead institute a discord, which obviously sucks. If we ever get to the point where you need a discord to learn how to linux, I will not blame anyone for not even trying.
But as it is, installing the "hard" distros like arch or gentoo feels way more comfortable to me than trying to wrestle around with the windows installer to force it to do minimum of what I don't want it to do*, and the "easy" distros are literally just around five clicks and you have a working system.

*I have had to install windows 10 many times over the years, thankfully I haven't had the displeasure with 11 yet, and I don't remember a single instance where the installer didn't take me down a road I didn't want, where I didn't have to restart the install process because I "messed something up", or where I didn't get angry. The worst mistake I made with installing mint was missclicking the locale once.

ok so like not to contrarian too hard but 5 years is not a lot of time compared to the fucking 40-50 gnu has had. the code looks simple but remember these guys are security autists that are trying to do everything with best practices
this is something wayland also has to deal with. not only do they need to replace (most) everything x11 did but they have to attack everything from a security standpoint which takes a lot of time
All I feel is extreme confusion; who in their right mind would say that passing 88% means it outperforms something that passes 100%? Is this guy on serious, life-altering drugs to the point he cannot see clearly?
i think his sticking point was it runs faster than the equivalent c programs and their last cope was "oh we have all the main stuff we're just missing every single fringe case known to man" which isn't true as we just saw with the date thing
but to rope that back into my above reply, they have to deal with every single fringe case known to man and rewrite it in rust and have it be secure code since this is supposed to be a 100% drop-in for gnutils, so its gonna take a long time to go through every single thing gnutils does and rewrite all of it.
for the average grandma user we've been talking about in the above posts: if she uses gnutils for very basic stuff, and if what the guy says is true, she should be able to use uutils instead which is presumably why ubuntu is so eager to adopt them (though canonical is probably jumping the gun and are going to fuck over their users for no reason again).
