The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

I know who won't be voting for this bill, Thomas Massie, but yet kiwifarmers in the politics thread hate him because he doesn't suck up to Trump 24/7.
Look, this 'Massie' character might be opposed to restricting human rights, but his refusal to try to match Trump's insatiable appetite for juju cum is not very MAGA.

Lol

Gaming is so much of an afterthought that the Xbox Series based on Windows has to run a hypervisor that prioritizes a minimized version of the OS to run games in
I mean, yeah. It's a general purpose OS that has a lot of stuff that is useful outside of games but not particularly useful inside of them, makes sense why they would strip it down to the bare essentials for the Xbox. Like, would you really use a full copy of MacOS just to run a non-windowed game on your console? And considering the fact that the Xbox One runs games under VMs for security realistically you do not need the UWP framework or multitasking or defender or fucking printing support on the consoles GAME ONLY operating system.

On the topic of the games running under a VM for security thing you should give the video below a watch. The Xbox One's architecture I think is really interesting and likely some of Microsoft's best work.

A bill on operating system level age verification (NOT attestation) has been introduced to the House of Representatives.
The bill is H.R.8250. The bill's text has not been released yet but the title suggest what will be inside.
Its a bipartisan bill.
I didn't watch the full video because I wanted to be like Paul Revere and spread it as fast as possible.
We. Are. So. Fucked. Please I swear if your in the U.S. write an email to your Senators and Representatives NOW.

Fucking Elise Stefanik is a co-sponsor. If this passes, Trump might actually sign it. Now my whole night shift is dedicated to writing angry letters to Congress, for fuck's sake. I'll try to make a copypasta letter for any other Kiwis who'll want it. I might write to Proton as well, I noticed their twitter admin is going off on age verification recently.

LITERALLY how is this enforceable? The only way I see it if you have systemd-ageattestationd-daemond running a hook that upstream sites can ping to determine if you have a kosher system, in which case spoofing is trivial. Even if they require ID verification, you can always just <insert glownigger instructions here>. If you know you know.
"Your a 2 man Linux project? Well guess what implement age verification or we will fuck you with fines!" Its so retarded. I have no clue exactly how this would be enforced? I guess projects that can't comply have to pull out or face fines. Fucking tech mongoloids. Do your research before you turn the enter internet into Skinner's Box. Most of the internet already is sadly but a few bastions hold strong like the Farms.

Can you send me a copy of the letter?

It’s not as bleak as you think, though I haven’t read the bill.

I imagine the requirement is upon vendors of operating systems, that is, folks who sell you an operating system. A two-man free-as-in-beer Linux distro probably doesn’t have to worry.

Remember that Congress is allowed to regulate commerce, but very rarely allowed to regulate speech. And the federal courts have already established that code is speech.

Alright here's the generic letter I've written out. Feel free to edit and improve on if you want.

I wrote it in a manner that most people can send it, not just tech minded people.
Edit in your information for your Rep/Sen and what not. Email it, physically mail it, call their offices, etc. Have your friends and family do it as well.

edit: just noticed Gottheimer, the author of this bill above, had recently introduced a different bill requiring social media companies to report anti-Zionism as hate/terrorism.

digital id: tool of exclusion - Whitney Webb

they are eventually gonna lock down all the bootloaders to only corporate/government signed binaries. i can feel it.

want to do anything useful on the internet? you'll need the bootloader to help verify that your digital ID is biometrically the same as your driver's license and that your OS stack is "approved".

thank God for my ancient laptop running linux and coreboot.

that's all mine till the day i die.

This bullshit is gonna make every OS function like an Android custom rom, where you need a selection of root modules to spoof/hide things so apps don't complain about detecting a haram component. Now it'll just be relating to these diabolical ID requests instead of Android's Indian endeavours.

Every single time. For the children btw. So long as its OS-level verification there should be ways to circumvent it, but if it becomes hardware level attestation, then our future falls squarely in the hands of Francis Rowe. It do be a dark day my niggers, it do be dark.

The text of the bill has just been released!

To be able to use the operating system (something which you own/paid for) you have to provide your date of birth. Doesn't sound like that part is age verification but if the birthday is under 18 then it verifies it.

"Develop a system to allow an app developer to access any information as is necessary" Well shit.
Does this only apply to consumer OSes? Is it specified?

Like for ex if I ssh into a server does that count as using an operating system? Or if I use Windows 11 IoT intended for like ATMs and gambling machines does that have the same requirements?

Ehhhh, if it gets too bad, I’ll just install Windows 10 IoT and have a bunch of pirated media on it without being connected to the internet.

I know where this is all going. And it is not the world I want to live in.

It doesn't mention this. If it goes unspecified that means people would technically have to verify age for servers, routers, etc. The bill was introduced yesterday so it will either die in committee (pray to whatever God you believe it does) or get amended.

You'd have to verify your age if you get a DLSR camera or use self checkout at the grocery store I'm guessing

The vagaries are concerning.

I wonder if this became law if some fucked up flavor of Linux could ship where say it didn't come with a kernel, so _technically_ it's not an operating system, but you are provided with an easy way to download one yourself at install time. So legally, it wouldn't need to do this because it's not an operating system out of the box.

The funny thing is this guy just cosponsored a bill talking about how Iranians need internet freedom.

Fundamental rights for people who we want oil from.
It's a huge oxymoron as well, you don't want any level of identifying "features" of a user in an oppressive country and tell them they need internet freedom. That's the point of Tor, Proxy VPN services, Tails OS, etc. They are meant to keep you anonymous* so you can freely use the internet (*so long as your practice good OPSEC).

There's some kind of new optimization for VRAM on Linux:

To my understanding it basically just sets the games to high priority in terms of memory management and tells everything else to fuck off. Currently only works on Cachy OS without tinkering. And people are showing huge gains in some games:
I noticed that games I run through Proton use noticeably more memory than on Windows, so I think it might give a noticeable boost in performance.

Also:

Dude you're not fooling anyone lol.
>its by an intern at Valve so its going to be praised as if GabeN himself has done it instead of the merits of the intern, even if it turns out to be really good, whatever.
>It currently relies on SystemD to even do it's thing.
