Yes they've re-re-re-remade Myst yet again. It's not Myst: Masterpiece Edition, It's not RealMyst, and it's not RealMyst: Masterpiece Edition, it's simply titled "Myst".

So what's new in this version? Well first off it can be done entirely in VR, secondly it can now be easily ported to all current consoles because VR is entirely optional. Now this is port done by Cyan Worlds itself and they've done a pretty decent job, except some puzzles glitch out towards the end and they're in the process of fixing them. There's currently no physical edition announced. However all signs are pointing to them pushing this game hard so widespread physical editions may be a real possibility. They're a small company and they went all out with the production values. The game plays smooth and has a lot of quality of life features that their more modern games like Obduction have.

But yeah this looks like a dry run for Riven and maybe they'll do the true and proper timeline we never got.

While it looks better than realMyst it really makes one think (especially since realMyst already exists) how much more effort would it have been to just make a new game?

I get that Myst is good, but it's not so good I want to play new graphics updates of the same game for 30 years. Maybe they're (rightfully) afraid a new title without brand recognition wouldn't sell. Call it Myst 2? I don't know, it's just a bit depressing.

To put it mildly, it's out on a heap of platforms.

It's on Steam, GOG, Oculus, XBox (and GamePass), Epic, the Mac App Store, probably a few others I forgot.

It looks like a neat remake but come on give us that redone Riven goddamnit

The game that sold more CD-ROM drives on the PC than anything else at the time.

If the puzzles are all the same, though, I wonder "why bother"? It's certainly pretty, but lots of computer games are.

As an aside, if you ever want to know about the most completely insane version of Myst you should look up the development story of the version for the Amiga.

Macintosh! It was the worlds best selling CD-ROM game and it was exclusive to the Macintosh at the time. It boggles the mind, games on an Apple computer... (I know about Hellcats, Marathon and the gentlemans erotica adventures, it's just a joke)

I would guess that puzzles/lore/story is the tough thing to create when making a new Myst or Myst-like so porting an existing one is cheaper and faster.

How many times have they made this game from the ground up
Not enough, it's older than Skyrim and has less ports with physical copies.

The last time a Myst game got ported to a console was Myst III: Exile for the PS2 and OG Myst for the DS and the most recent was RealMyst: Masterpiece Edition for the Switch.

I know it was a big exclusive for the Mac, but it sold lots of CD-ROMs for the PC, because you'd get it with Reveal or Creative CD-ROM drives (when a 2x drive would set you back $149.99 at Computer City) and sound-card bundles, because MS was pushing that stupid-in-hindsight "MPC-2" standard for PCs.

Myst was no doubt a big thing but Rebel Assault was THE thing that everyone with a CD-ROM at the time had(other than Microcosm, 7th Guest and Mega Race). Myst was restrained to flash-cards or whatever they were called and not FMV-CGI like Rebel Assault. But unlike Myst, Rebel Assault wasn't a real game. Mega Race, like 7th Guest, were impressive in extreme nerdlinger ways.

The only thing I remember about Rebel Assault was never making it past the sky hopper section because no matter what I did the controls never seemed to work.

I even tried using a logitech joystick.

It was shit, Microcosm was better and still bad, Mega Race was way better and more impressive and they were all in that same genre of CD-ROM games from the same period.

It says puzzle randomization. But I don't know if that means new ones or they just change the old ones slightly.

I first played it on Saturn. But I didn't actually finish it until the horrific DS version. Yeah. That's the version I beat. Don't ask how with the wonky responses to touching anything. Some switches weren't even square on the graphic you were supposed to touch. So when I was in the Channelwood Age I had to keep messing with the valves since they didn't like to move. Graphics were pretty muddy too. But I'm kind of proud I finished worst version without throwing my DS against a brick wall in frustration.

You know what it means. The puzzles that can have the order of switches or whatever randomized will do that. There's no way they actually went in and implemented new alternative puzzles, that would demand creativity.

I tried playing this shit as a kid and it was infuriating to me, only reason I ever even tried it was because it was the only game my mom ever actually wanted me to play. Is it actually good or is it just nostalgia for when those kinda graphics were impressive like FFVII?

lol people been telling me to play Myst since I was like 11 and I still haven't.
I remember trying to play Myst when my family went and decided to upgrade to a PC with a CD-ROM. When I learned it was just puzzles ontop of puzzles I immediately lost interest. Decades later I still feel the same.

Still I hope this remake does well, Rand Miller still just making Adventure games 30 years later is cool.

Well to be honest Riven is pretty much superior to Myst in every aspect, but Myst laid the foundations. Exploring an alien world full of secrets and shit is the appeal. Everything in the game plays a part in some aspect of a puzzle so you're not just reading useless garbage filler like modern games do. Your reward for solving the puzzle is to unlock new methods of transport to then explore further new areas.

The whole thing about the newer versions of Myst though is that you're given free reign to explore rather than pre-rendered scenes you click though.
