I've been thinking about this quite a lot lately and no easy answer comes to mind. The concept of beauty is defined as "a quality or combination of qualities that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is often associated with properties such as harmony of form or color, proportion, authenticity, and originality." What I know for sure is that beauty is a concept perceived in the abstract, creating different interpretations of what beauty is to different people. That is subjective.

To say that beauty is entirely subjective is not quite correct when you take into account how certain basic features such as a symmetrical face, clear skin, good/healthy hair, etc are considered to be good, objectively attractive traits. Its the same way with how many people see a sunset or a perfectly grown rose as beautiful.

To go the opposite direction and make the assertion that beauty is entirely objective isn't truly correct either. Is beauty a universal truth obscured by varying human interpretation? Who is the regulator, arbitrator, evaluator of initially what beauty is as a definable and quantifiable position? I don't believe anyone is. Why do people disagree with others on which physical traits are subjective while their exist examples of other objects or features being preferred by a wide number of humans? I really don't know the answer.

Discuss.

The obsession with butts is absurd. I don't know how or where it started to become a requirement for beauty (probably has something to do with rap), but I honestly think supposedly "big behinds" look hilariously ridiculous. Especially when the fatties (no offense) think they look great by ridiculing people of smaller sizes.

On another note, I don't know whether to call it confidence or delusion

I think it has something to do with the association with the hips. Having wide hips indicates having little risk of developing issues while carrying children. It's a primal instinct thing.

I'm kind of biased in this regard though as I also find butts attractive. Not TOO big of course.

Eh, it's not any more absurd than obsessions with boobs. Asses, like tits, are a built-in sexual interest for men.

Personally I'm a boob man myself but I like them firm, perky but not too big.

Never really was into butts, but like all other thing I prefer them firm and I guess average size? Not huge but it should still be visible.

I dislike sagging, rolls and cellulite, yuck!

I don't think objective beauty really exists. For humans, beauty in a biological sense means traits which indicate physical and reproductive fitness. Beauty can be found in anything. For example, I find perfect beauty in a well-crafted dank meme from le 9gag.

Actually if I remember my biology correctly, breasts evolved to mimic asses when mankind started walking upright. As a sexual indicator.

FYI: Homo sapiens is the only mammal to have hidden estrus. It's what built our culture as males now had to stick around after sex rather then just wandering off to ensure an offspring was his.

I think that there's a difference between beautiful/attractive and pretty/doesn't-sear-my-eyes-when-I-look-at-them. Like, she's undeniably fat, and I therefore don't find her sexually attractive. However, she's not necessarily ugly.

Ideals of beauty change with the times. It's not so long ago that smaller butts were the in thing. In the 50s, curves were considered sexy. In the 60s, the waif look. At different times in history, it's been considered sexy to be curvy, skinny, fat, buxom, flat-chested, hairy, athletic and just about any other physical quality you can think of. And that's just talking about women - what's considered sexy in a man seems to change from week to week. Of course, there's also the question of personal preference, which often has nothing to do with what the magazines tell you is beautiful.

The only universal standard of beauty seems to be things like clear skin, symmetry and a lack of obvious deformities - in other words, things that indicate good health in a potential donor of genetic material.

I find that a lot of women who I think are attractive/sexy do not fit the mold.

As for beauty being subjective, almost everything is.

One persons crap is anothers gold.

Human nature.

Guys are hot. Girls are hot. As long as they all have a sensible weight and appearance, clear skin, and washed hair, I'm not complaining.

I have some muscular problems and a large birthmark (all on my face.) because of prematurity and it took me a long, long time to like what I saw in the mirror, and also to grasp the concept that there are (a few) people who find me attractive anyway. I still don't believe my SO 100% when he compliments me. But I'm getting there.

Life means so much more than being conventionally attractive. While there is a standard of beauty, most people will find deviations attractive anyway. Only a very small (and vocal) portion of the population is gung-ho on scoring a perfect "10", and those people will likely remain single forever.

Also I would like to add that beauty has very little objective base outside of "looks healthy". Paintings from various cultures and time periods will tell you a lot.
