Love this potato illustration of Starship docked to Orion I grabbed from a The Space Race clickbait video.

If you showed that to a normie and asked them which one was the space rocket and which one was the lunar lander what would they say?

I doubt they could tell it is not just one big rocket to begin with.

The whole notion of, "fuck it just use this giant reusable spacecraft for a lunar lander" is still wild to me.

It's completely retarded that it is the better option. Probably due to the main factor that it was already in development as opposed to, "we've never done this but maybe we could" competing bids.

Well this is the intented purpose of starship, to fly to and from anywhere in the solar system

Minding there is no reason whatsoever to use orion for any stage of the mission, but also it probably wont be, in the end

Basically, it's because the person in charge of the selection at the time wanted to set herself up for a job at SpaceX at the time (a lot of high ranking ppl at NASA have moved over). Oh, and that the other bids were just a farce. The national team bid for example wasn't good and part of the reason why Starship was liked because of the scalability for future excursions.

You need a giant reusable spacecraft to actually do anything useful on the moon. If you just want another photo op then yeah maybe reinventing Saturn V would have been enough. But if we're going to actually begin colonization efforts we'll need the giant cheap cargo space Starship provides. Plus nobody has managed to even the inferior photoop option anyway.

It still just seems like too giant a leap, but then I guess the original LEM was probably a bigger leap in the 60s. Not at all was suggesting it's not good or possible but just reflecting of how it seems when what is possible was space travel has been for the last 60 years.

Some of the best documentaries on the Apollo Program ever produced.

I wonder if it will end up looking more like this
