I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

AOC is like the gift that keeps on giving. I wonder what other bills or legislation she’ll come up with next? Maybe she’ll have plastic straws and cups taxed and a fee for using them at a restaurant?Maybe a charge of 10¢ per plastic straw?
thats way to real, She is the gurwl for the realy retarded shit.

The fact that Clinton's hit squad hasn't been called in to literally string this exceptional individual up in central park as a message to democratic socialists like AoC to stop fucking up a good thing suggests to me that the old hag has accepted she will never be president and should go in peace into that dark night. Why do people you hate a few favors on your way out?
Because she believes that she'll be able to use it as leverage later.

Hildawg is the type that never calls it quits if she thinks she can get what she wants. No matter how reality won't conform to her desires.

It's a bit amazing, because despite all the griping and such about Amazon never paying any tax (something which made the head of Amazon UK nervous recently is the fact that, post-Brexit, Amazon's income is taxed here and not in fucking Luxembourg) they have a tendency of boosting development, or kickstarting redevelopment thanks to their presence.

Those 25,000 jobs were all middle-top tier taxpayers too, meaning it was a decent amount of regular tax income likely to come in for Long Island City, especially as those 25,000 were going to wind up within an hour's commute (or typically, far less).

Meaning AOC and her cohorts haven't cost Long Island City 25,000 jobs. They've probably cost closer to 100,000 jobs in the wider city as more businesses and staff would be needed to service those 25,000. Extra store clerks, cafe posts, bartenders, hairdressers, etc. And that's before we get into the kind of stuff upper-middle class and upper class taxpayers also like as luruxies such as biking, hiking, and expensive sports that'd likely require more staff to serve existing shops or generate new small businesses.

All good, entry level and above jobs, and all good chances for small business owners to enter the market.

So, slow clap for AOC and her friends for being unable to think remotely medium to long term.

You say all that as if it was ever about helping people. These politicians don't want to help the poor, they don't want to erase poverty by creating wealth, they don't want people to have jobs.

They want power and control.

So what you're telling me is that socialists have a hard time not only understanding their economics major but have a difficult time understanding the basis of capitalism itself?

Basically because Amazon uses sleight of hand to pay tax (via it's workforce) AOC and her friends go "SCREEEEEEE BAD!"

Rather than considering it would've massively expanded the tax base over five years during a time when New York is bleeding from a sucking wound of "lol no money."

AOC's sperging about how 'those three billion in tax breaks can now stay in the community'.

You ignorant, donkey-faced whore. That three billion doesn't exist and never will. You don't base your balance sheets on phantom numbers.

:story:
Ahhhh holy shit, I can't believe my prediction that she was hiring staff based on ideological purity rather than competence was giving her too much credit. What the fuck is this timeline? If I were Pelosi I'd be trying to arrange a tragic (((accident))) to befall AOC or be searching for anyone semi-comptent to carpetbag into her district, provided the district isn't nuked in the next redistricting cycle.

Never get in the way of your enemy making mistakes. AOC has been hellbent on making herself and her career radioactive. They are already talking about who is going to primary her or outright eliminate her district for 2020. Guarantee you that her next opponent will be fully funded and looking to kick her out. She has yet to go up against a real competitor.

Hmm... this seems kinda familiar

She did although I feel like I should call @Capsaicin Addict out by pointing out that AOC is in fact a braying donkey-faced whore. It's just as easy to get these things right, you know.
Toh-may-to, toh-mah-to.

People voted for this person, you know. To represent them in Congress. Granted, she went door-to-door and caught the incumbent completely flat footed, but I should try and look up some of her campaign literature. See if it was this progressively communist as she is now.

Christ, I need a drink.
