The successor thread - New video games made by people because companies dont want money

As much as there are games. Companies like Nintendo are the worse when it comes to listening to the demand of their customers for new games. However. Its not going to stop indie developers or former developers for a company to start something new to deliver something they'd want to make. But it give a spin to give gamers what they want, and so the developer can make what they want. That being the successor. How many here have played video game successors to popular titles that probably wont come back any time soon because of management.

I did enjoy A Hat In Time being a successor to Mario Sunshine, it was better than Yooka Laylee.

Bloodstained: Circle of the Moon is the best example of a spiritual successor. It goes so far as to surpass Castlevania, which is amazing.

I'm playing BS: CotM2 now and it's still good, but it feels more bullshitty. Enemies are faster and more erratic, stage design is fucked if you don't have a particular character alive for certain segments, and the controls ask too much of the player sometimes (the girl's pogo jump controls fucking awfully). A couple bosses were pure chaos filling the screen, the mummy boss has been most egregious so far.

Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair is sort of a Donkey Kong Country clone/spiritual successor. It isn't as successful in that as Bloodstained was, but it's still one of the best controlling 2D platformers ever. I don't care much for the setting, characters, or general aesthetic design so it's tough to get into despite that.
 
Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. It's a spiritual successor to the original Paper Mario games. One of the best games that I've played in the past few years, though the start was a bit slow. I spent the first 30-60 minutes wondering if I made a mistake buying it, and next thing I knew six hours had passed.

It's on pretty much everything, so definitely give it a try if you have a chance.
 
Overload is Descent 4. Created by the original team that made Descent (after loosing the naming right to a quick cash in that never actually released) it is the modern 6 degree of freedom shooter load with secrets and even a decent story. Sadly there is no market for a 6 degree FPS any more and the team had to disband after the release of the game due to poor sales.
 
I haven’t played much of this series, but FAST Racing is a spiritual successor to F-Zero that has entries on Wii, Wii U, and Switch. The Switch version is called FAST RMX, and it was a launch title.

And even though Mega Man isn’t really dead anymore, one great spiritual successor made during its downtime was Mighty No. 9…’s spin-off, Mighty Gunvolt Burst. A heavily-expanded sequel to the original Mighty Gunvolt, which was a small crossover between Mighty No. 9 and Azure Striker Gunvolt, this game has plenty of replayability through upgrades, sidegrades, and several playable characters (though some of those characters are DLC) that offer many different playstyles. If you want a “real” Mighty No. 9 that lives up to its promise of being a true successor to Mega Man, this is it.

Redout is a great substitute for Wipeout if you cannot play the latter for whatever reason. No direct-damage powerups, but the racing physics are very similar, and the tracks and music are killer.

Would you say that Yooka Laylee was a huge improvement over the first game? I know a few people who backed the first one and were quite disappointed with the final results of it.
