Games are perhaps the perfect example of "anti-Stallman" software, and Windows does surprisingly well supporting them (so much so, that the default way to run games on Mac and Linux now is "emulate Windows with WINE and rule the school" because fucking WINE is a more stable ABI/API than anything linux provides lol

So no wonder a gaming distro is pretty stable there.

Companies use these 10 year support distros like RHEL because they hope that they'll be long gone when shit hits the fan, which is why CentOS dying was such a fuck.

(Stallman et al would say that its caused by closed-source software as open source software you can keep modifying it to deal with the latest API changes because fuck you that's why; though you can add "unmaintained" to "closed source" for all its worth)

Anyway, back to windows. Microsoft missed a big chance in the 2000s to make a headless Windows easily available for free for servershit. It could have caught on.

Garuda Linux has Firedragon which is a Floorp fork that is basically Opera GX without the poz and its a really good way to get gamer normies to jump ship if they ever do some shit like make programs not work for 10 LTSC.

The only game I have that runs worse on linux for me is Halo MCC and even then its like 300fps on Windows and 180fps on Linux so I am not hurting, its not shocking because its literally the microsoft flagship so of course it will tun better on windows. Its just insane to me how its through like 2 compatibility layers alongside EAC which will slow down games yet I get a locked 180.

I'll be building a Windows 7 gaming PC with time correct parts to go with my retro gaming collection when I can get to it so I can play all of the PC exclusive games I missed out on from the 90-00s. I'm actually really excited to do it I have a collection of obscure big box PC games i'm itching to play.

I have Classic7 on a drive of mine and its legitimately impressive how the guy who made it modded 10LTSC to look, feel, and sound just like Win7. It also runs way better with less processes and no telemetry which is an added bonus.

7 is perfection and everything after it is trash

I remember having shitty problems with Win 7 on some games. XP would be my goto with a third gen i5 and gtx 750ti. I just have to get it done and haul over a crt display for the high refresh rate.

What the fuck did I just read? Are you high? What does gaming have to do with a browser?

Opera GX is sold as a "Gaming Browser" and people are switching to Troonix because it does run some games better so something with a gamer aesthetic like Garuda Linux has an aesthetic that will pull that crowd over if Windows 10 LTSC ever stops working

I do IT stuff for friends and family, I had to do this for my friend whose laptop wouldn't use my reccomendation of 10 LTSC because something about the motherboard missing drivers but the gamer linux distros worked flawlessly and he didn't need to set up drivers or codecs

I usually direct people to use Classic 7 instead of troonix

I think my next PC will be a Steam PC. If I can get it to run my emulation stuff it's over.
Emulation is piss easy in wine now and a lot of emulators have native Troonix versions, a lot of the gamer distros like Nobara and Garuda or Bazzite even come with emulators out of the box.

Some mods will still not work because certain DLL files decide to be fucky but protontricks usually solves it, dual boot with LTSC as Valve even reccomends a dual boot for some games.

The thing that pushed me over the edge to Troonix despite being a diehard LTSC user was that AMD's official drivers started breaking compatibility in old games like Vanquish and a ton of GoG games I had. R.ID is the other option you can use for Windows AMD drivers but security updates also fucked with old games not being able to write. I had this awful ghosting issue in Vanquish that did not happen on the Mesa drivers.

I switched to Mint last year, and it's been pretty good for the most part. I can't deny that I miss how things Just Work on Windows sometimes. I spent a few hours trying to install a local AI voice cloner to mess around with before giving up. In Windows, I'd just have to download an exe.

I wish Microsoft would make a modern OS similar to windows xp. No advertisements, no bloat, it just works. But no, they have to add all of this bullshit that it doesn't need and make it hard to navigate. It's not like the average person could switch to Linux, because it's not good for normies who aren't computer-autists. I don't want to have to use a bunch of console commands to download and install an application.

They should look back at Windows 2K, not XP. Coming 2K was clean and simple and I was absolutely appalled by the ugly Luna theme. They also reorganised the Control Panel which annoyed me. Something they've been doing ever since, I might add. I know I could switch those back to 'classic', but XP just seemed like a lot of change for the sake of change.

It wasn't ugly. I rather look at this than boring white colors. It did however look very childish. Like a Fisherprice OS.
