Toontown Discussion

HAL 9000

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Toontown Online was a MMORPG by Disney made in 2003 that took place in Toontown, a town where cartoon characters lived. One day, evil business robots called Cogs invaded Toontown. The toons must fight back to save their town with Gags. Pies, squirting flowers, bike horns, safes, and many more are Gags, which are used to fight cogs. Sadly, in 2013, Disney announced the closure of TTO, as they were going to move on to more mobile games and Club Penguin. They also shut down Pixie Hollow and Pirates of the Carribean Online in 2013.

In 2014, a group of teenagers announced that they will create a private server for TTO, called Toontown Rewritten (TTR). TTR soon went into beta the following year and a public release happened in mid 2015. TTR offers no subscription and is completely free. Constant updates happen, bringing back stuff from TTO (Parties and Doodles are next) and even new content, such as the Executive Office. TTR also offers a complex story line, which are usually given to us in sorts of ARGs.

Soon, other people followed and made more private servers such as Toontown Fellowship and soon Toontown Apex. Now even complete reimaginings of the game, such as Toontown 2 (Which I got a alpha key for! Woohoo!) are being made, which is rumored to try to be like the fabled Toontown 2.0, the canceled successor to TTO. Recently a prototype of Toontown 2.0 has been found.

The creator of Toontown himself completely supports these private servers and even has participated in cons answering questions (OMGCon is where TTR hosts a panel every year). The whole Toontown community is super active and very welcoming of new players who haven't even played the original.

Do any of you remember the original Toontown or play TTR? What are your thoughts on it if you haven't played it?

Not surprising that autists played it. After all, I'm so far on the spectrum that I'm rapidly approaching normal from the other side.

I played the original toontown. Was kinda interesting.

...Ah, fuck it, I'll bite.

I played Toontown when I was about 8 or 9. I remember begging my mom to get the paid membership until she gave in and got it for me for like a year.

Interesting someone's maintaining it still.

I vaguely remember it. You're in a ToonTown with Disney character throwing pies at robots.

I didn't know it had a subscription; I got bored after a day.

The character creation was fun tho.

rewritten is still fun to play, the fact that the playerbase continues to be almost all 30 year olds helps a lot

For the longest time, I seem to remember the box art of Toontown Online being this dark shadowy city with some silhouettes of generic cartoon characters approaching it and the Cog monster in the background (or something), yet when I tried to look it up the box art was completely different.

Now I'm not sure what to think.

Seems OK but why the fuck didn't they get rid of the mandatory blocking quest that requires you to spam friend requests at everyone until someone accepts?

Toontown E-celeb "CoachZEvilTwin" (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfubWI4LCoPgD9ahtMceLog) disappeared for a few years several years back. Something that most people don't know is that during that time he was arrested and convicted for calling multiple bomb threats to his high school in Rockford Michigan (https://archive.is/zhZDY). The sperg would eat lunch in the school bathroom and got a known toontown exploiter known as "Maverick" to send death threats through the phone to a girl he had a crush on because that's the way you get all the bitches. It's pretty fucking insane he just came back to YouTube and started doing more of the same with very few people actually being aware of what happened.

It looked like something I would have been interested in back in the day.
Man I remember playing this game a lot as a kid. Looking back at the plot it kinda has an anti-capitalist feeling to it.
If I remember from reading the wiki about it way back in the day, the robots are organized into groups based around themes like law, media, business. So you could take a sort of Communist "overthrow the system" vibe from it. I think that what it was going for, what with gags being the main weapons, was a "sticking it to the squares" type of feeling, not anti-capitalist in the sense of bitching about exploitation but more laughing at adults and adult things for being sticks in the mud.
