Tory MP suprised you cant say "nigger" anymore. - MPs John Redwood and Bill Cash were on panel but reportedly did not react

When she claims that she misspoke, what the fuck was she TRYING to say that came out as "the nigger in the woodpile"

what even does that mean

I haven't even heard of this phrase before and apparently another Tory MP did the exact same thing back in 2008

How does an racist figure of speech from the 1800s just slip into your normal vocabulary

Really? the world has moved on that far since the 70s?

A "nigger in the woodpile" is an unwelcome surprise. You go out at night for more wood to cook gruel to feed your 73 urchins, and discover a nigger sheltering there, an unwelcome surprise.

I think she was trying to go with "elephant in the room" but she is a Tory discussing Europe, so I suspect the word nigger was at the front of her mind.

It is the Conservative party. Less than a hundred years ago Winston Churchill literally went out into the streets with a rifle and started shooting strikers while wearing a suit and top hat.

Either way, imagine being so dumb thinking that using the word nigger would go well at all?

It's like the Conservative party found a load of left-wing propaganda cartoons from the 1970s and decided to model themselves on that. Let's not forget that Boris Johnson literally described Africans as having "watermelon smiles."

So Dr Seuss can say the nigger word but a politician can't? What's this world coming to?

A hidden bad thing. I'm not sure why anyone would say that when there are phrases with similar meanings, like "fly in the ointment," that don't have "nigger" in them. It's like they have a niggardly vocabulary.

Parliament sounds like a circus. Can't limeys ever shut up?
.

See, what people don't understand it PMQ's is sort of a posh British verion of people talking smack at each other, there's a lot of taking the piss and mocking someone for how stupid their policies are, followed by jeering/cheering. If it were more modern there'd be mic drops.

Normally unknowns don't get to say as much, but obviously in this case the crazy got through.

Complete robots like Brown were awful at it, whereas Cameron was pretty good. Corbyn is awful but he's gotten a little better IIRC.

Sometimes I wish the US had something like this because it'd be amazing.

At least one shooting would happen at every congressional hearing.

It's often said that the distance between the sides is what it is in order that it is more than two sword lengths across to stop people fighting each other.

I've no idea how true that is but it'd be hilarious if so.

Now I have the image of Boris Johnson launching himself into the opposition bench with a samurai sword and desperately want it to happen.

Congress is tragically well-behaved these days.

I long for the days of duels between Congressmen.
