Nearly 45,000 homes were temporarily without electricity on Saturday night after a fire was started at an electrical transformer in western Nice.

Two anarchist groups in France have claimed responsibility for a power outage that left more than 160,000 homes without power in the south of the country.

The blackout affected the city of Nice and the Cannes Film Festival as well as knocking out power to vital services like traffic lights and cash machines.

Local officials said they suspected the outage was caused by an arson attack and two self-styled "bands of anarchists" said they were behind the attack.

UK media said the groups had published an anonymous letter on Sunday in which they reportedly wrote: "The aim of the action was not only to disrupt the festival, but also to deprive all industrial establishments of electricity."

But the groups didn’t explain why they wanted to target the festival or industrial sites.

According to the public prosecutor's office, a fire broke out at an electrical transformer in the Moulins district in the west of Nice.

Mayor Christian Estrosi said the fire had been deliberately started and that he "strongly condemned these malicious acts that affect our country" in a post on X.

He added that the city would be strengthening its security around electrical sites in the coming days and that a formal complaint would be filed following the incident.

Power was restored around 6 am on Sunday. The neighbouring towns of Saint-Laurent-du-Var and Cagnes-sur-Mer were also affected by the blackout.

The incident follows a blackout that struck Cannes and the surrounding region the previous day, affecting nearly 160,000 homes.

A high-voltage substation was set on fire in the Var department, and a power pylon was sawn down in the Alpes-Maritimes.

Despite the disruption, the Cannes Film Festival proceeded as planned on its final day, thanks to its independent power supply. Electricity was restored to the region by late afternoon.

Disrupt the festival... why? Is it because those fruitcakes are angry that people are spending money and having fun?

The statement was posted on an ‘alternative’ website, Indy Media, which has hosted other claims of sabotage in the past. The site is linked to the far-left milieu in the city of Nantes, a very active breeding ground for environmental and anarchist activists mobilised around a planned airport in Notre-Dame-des-Landes, which has been fuelling extremist mobilisations for years.

COMMUNIQUE DU SABOTAGE CONTRE DES INSTALLATIONS ÉLECTRIQUES SUR LA CÔTE D’AZUR :
ET… COUPEZ !

Senshypercritique

COMMUNICATION OF SABOTAGE AGAINST ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA:
AND... CUT!

Two bands of anarchists here. We claim responsibility for the attack on electrical installations on the Côte d'Azur. On the eve of the Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony and gala evening, we sabotaged the main substation supplying the Cannes area, and sawed through the 225 kV line coming from Nice.

The aim of this action was not only to disrupt the festival, but also to cut power to Thales Alenia Space's research centers and factories, its dozens of subcontractors, the French Tech start-ups who thought they were safe, the airport and all other industrial, military and technological establishments in the area.

An unexpected break in a bad horror film that drags on and on. The same scenario is played over and over again to the point of nausea. The scenes change, as do the special effects, but the backdrop is always the same: a world that won't stop bombing, exploiting, mining, hoarding, raping, ravaging, starving, machine-gunning, polluting and exterminating until everything is under its control.

We know we're not on a film set, but the phrase “CUT!” seemed to sum up our desire: to extinguish this deadly system.

AND... CUT! Your showcase for the grandiloquent French Republic, defender of the values of Progress on the international stage, but above all the second largest arms exporter in the world. French excellence in this field arms NATO and sows death, from Yemen to Gaza, from Ukraine to the Sahel.

AND... CUT! Your obscene ceremony at the edge of a sea that has become a cemetery for refugees, and the industrial dustbin of a society that loves to bring revolt to the screen, but represses and imprisons anyone who rises up against its domination of the world.

AND... CUT! The promotion of the surrogate world you create with your TV shows and movies, which wants us to forget the real planet, rotten with factories, highways, concrete and mines.

AND... CUT! The testi... No? (Tempting!) Well, the hands! ... No more?! The tongue then!

In short, silence all those who say: "Those hysterical women are exaggerating! Put an end to these oppressors with their thousand masks, who turn bodies into objects, and who defend the rape culture that is so widespread in the film industry, from the screen to the film set, but just as widespread elsewhere...

AND... CUT! The power of your military-technological industries. Thales-Alenia Aerospace, a leader in the defense sector, manufactures gun sighting and missile guidance systems, and space telecommunications. It is by far the leading manufacturer of satellites in Europe, particularly those for military use. The labs and workshops at the Cannes site run 24 hours a day. Several thousand engineers and technicians work daily on the development of these military satellites (observation, communication, missile and drone guidance) and civilian satellites (telecommunications, surveillance).

AND... CUT! Your sickening speeches that want to drag us into your war preparations. Your announcements of reindustrialization and nuclear revival. Your talks about ecological transition and the continuation of industrial society. Your rhetoric against those who fight against your cement factories, freeways, nuclear sites, chemical plants, high-speed trains and microwave masts. Your calls for national unity, the “rearmament” of the nation-state, the defense of your values and your vision of the world.

So yes... Cut the power to what's destroying us!
Sabotage is possible!
Switch off screens
Switch off freeways
Switch off pylons
Switch off artificial light
Switch off TGV lines
Switch off telecommunications
Switch off bulldozer pipes
Switch off power to military industry
Switch off power to factories
Switch off oil and gas pipelines
Switch off windmill measuring masts measuring masts
Cut off supply lines to armies
Cut off water to industrial agriculture and electronics factories
Cut off cables to photovoltaic power plants
Cut off antennas
Cut off bars to prison cells (and long live attacks on the clink!). )
Cut short the reformist and authoritarian rhetoric
Cut short the silencing and minimization of patriarchal violence
Cut short the pedestal of celebrities and other men of power, who assault and rape behind the scenes as well as on the battlefield
Cut short those who say to wait
And... hang in there. Take heart.
And since you love to bring the rebellion to the screen... And you've got to have a sense of humor!

Inspired by the latest hits in international cinema, here's a self-production released especially for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival!

Sabotage 2 : Nocturne à Cannes
An anonymous self-production

Production

Unknown and determined to stay that way

Scenario

Inspired by real-life convictions

Release date

May 2025

Synopsis

Set in a world on the brink of apocalypse, the film follows the adventures of a libertarian commando on a mission to sabotage technological factories of great military importance.

When they decide to strike during a prestigious cultural event, a race against time begins...

If you love women short-circuiting aluminum production, middle-schoolers burning down factories, Fremen rising up against the intergalactic empire, or commandos taking on the oil industry, you won't be left wanting with this latest production.
Les Incorruptibles

The special effects sometimes leave something to be desired, which is not surprising given the limited resources available for this production, but the script and strategic cunning more than make up for this shortcoming.
Cannes Matin

An irresistible tale of good versus evil. A favorite in these times of confusion and disarray.
Allocinéma

It's hard to excuse the lack of nuance, the absence of constructive dialogue and the clear democratic deficit in the radical message conveyed by the protagonists, but it's in keeping with the times.
Le Phigareau

Idealistic thriller with consequences more real than ever.
Senshypercritique

A vibrant call to rearm... radical protest.
L'univers diplomate

A must-read.

Interesting, and no doubt this will happen over in the UK at some point.

The Far Left cannot stand not getting their way and will do bat shit insane stuff like this to scare people into conformity.

Not a widely known fact, but anarchists hate tourists. Because of some jibber jabber about globalization, gentrification, what have you.

That doesn't surprise me. Tourists do make some areas worse (partially because of the AirBnBs), but this sort of response comes across as infantile. That behavior should be relegated to actual third world shitholes where scammers form groups to rip off tourists.

Do these clowns think it's the 1970s?
If they want to go to war with a western government then good luck. It's not about just avoiding the police these days it's about not even being able to use a cellphone, or the internet or even using a credit card. For better or for worse western governments can make it impossible to live in society for you if they want to.

I think that’s why they’re turning off the power. That leverage only exists as long as electricity does.
