There is no shortage of egotrips in fiction and cinema, but what about video games? First things first, let's define what makes vanity projects what they are(you are free to correct me on this and suggest more).
  • Author is obviously an egomaniac or at least terribly narcissistic.
  • Had no previous experience in the field and just one day decided to crush it with his marvelous never seen before idea.
  • Usually takes a role of an idea guy behind the project, but can also do some stuff for it.
  • Refuses to actually learn or take criticism to heart due to the reasons listed above.
  • The product has author's sueish self-insert or his world views as a immutable truth, but usually both of these.
  • The plot, if the product has one, usually bent over towards the protagonist always being correct and his enemies being wrong.
  • Lots of drama, fights and departures behind the scenes thanks to constant clashes between author's ego and the voice of reason from the team.
  • All of the above leads to the end product being rushed, underdeveloped or sometimes just canceled.
  • If it gets released and meets a wave of criticism, the author either goes DFE or most likely starts slapfight tournament with his critics everywhere he can.
The examples of such are listed, but not limited to (again, suggest more and correct me if you want):

Anonymous Agony. The perfect specimen, hits almost every point from the list. If you know something about this masterpiece of an egotrip, please, share, since all I was able to find were just brief recollections from those who followed the development back in the day. I wish I would be able to talk to people who suffered under this guy.

The review from Mandalore Gaming. Not very good, but gives you an idea of what it is.

Yandere Simulator and The Lunar Scythe. Both games dead on arrival and never to be released prototypes are by Alex Mahan, who has a giant thread here. Despite having some experience in the field, Alex hasn't learned to code after almost 11 fucking years of dragging this shit anywhere, but a release window. Most of the game was made for free by volunteers and there are tons of messages about misconduct, theft and just shit treatment. Both are full of Alex's teenage edgy worldview i.e. "dark and serious" as he calls it. According to him he keeps YS around just because he doesn't want to prove his haters right and he had a lot of slapfights before resorting to his highly moderated Discord and Reddit hugboxes.

YIIK. Without going much into authors being bad at gamedev and putting "postmodern" into the title without really understanding what it means, you can feel that the only reason they made this was the giant disaster that their previous game was. They were so upset by the backlash that near the end of YIIK the protagonist of that game comes to the aid of YIIK protagonist and gives speech about not giving up despite and shit.

Video that gets deeper into the dev drama and their previous game.

Derek Smart and his games. To his credit he learned to code to make his games and worked on them mostly alone, but holy shit if he has an ego which led to him becoming a full on lord of Tekken in internet slapfights back in Usenet days. No self inserts, but I doubt there is a game able to handle an ego like this one.

Video about the old drama.

A Tehsnakerer fan I see. Good stuff.

There was a gamergate RPG based around stopping bigots by using a mind wiping machine. I don't remember the title or what happened to it.

There was also a Penny Arcade game, Rain Slicked Precipice of Darkness. People seemed to like it at the time. Author insert characters save the day.

As for games I know the title of.

Depression Quest

A choose your own adventure game about depression. Zoe Quinn's magnum opus, and considered awful.

I Get This Call Every Day

Yes, it really does look like that.

A game about a man working at a call center, made by a man working at a call center, who lost his job at the call center when his boss found the game about the call center. He got into game development not because he liked games, but the local game dev scene had some cool people in it and he wanted to be like them.

I don't know much about this tbh, but it was Brianna Wu's game.

Fits almost all the criteria of the OP.

  • Author is obviously an egomaniac or at least terribly narcissistic.
    • Check
  • Had no previous experience in the field and just one day decided to crush it with his marvelous never seen before idea.
    • A 2D platformer that can rotate in 3D. Followed by having a ARG. Check
  • Usually takes a role of an idea guy behind the project, but can also do some stuff for it.
    • The game was allegedly stolen from his co-dev, and lacks the ability to make the promised sequel alone, so cancelled it. Check
  • Refuses to actually learn or take criticism to heart due to the reasons listed above.
    • Threw a big tantrum and cancelled the sequel, along with other tantrums on social media. Check.
  • Lots of drama, fights and departures behind the scenes thanks to constant clashes between author's ego and the voice of reason from the team.
    • Was the premise of Indie Game: The Movie, of which his co-dev was edited out where possible, and censored when not. Check
  • All of the above leads to the end product being rushed, underdeveloped or sometimes just canceled.
    • Fez 2 was cancelled. Check
  • If it gets released and meets a wave of criticism, the author either goes DFE or most likely starts slapfight tournament with his critics everywhere he can.
    • Massive social media tantrums, before leaving the internet 4 evar! Only to quietly return as a musician to see if anyone would notice before disappearing again.

Johnaton Blow.

Though the case could be made that they earned it.

Heartbound, shitty early access Undertale clone made by PirateSoftware (the WoW roach with the bathroom gnome)

I thought you meant games that get developed when some e-celeb decides that he's famous and has a game made about himself. Like AVGN Adventures, for example.

But at least it was pretty good(according to the steam reviews). Now, this game, featuring a Russian retro game reviewer, was hot garbage.
I think it was so bad that it even got removed from the Nintendo Switch store.

I'll throw Arcadian Atlas into the ring since the drama surrounding it is pretty insular but also very funny. If you can imagine what Fez would be like as a SRPG except with two copies of Phil Fish as the main dev staff you've got a decent idea of what a shitshow it is. It doesn't exactly hit all the guidelines in the OP but for every issue the game dodges, it doubles down on another.

If you want a very good rundown of exactly why it's such a tirefire check out the steam reviews, this one in particular does a good job of hitting the key points. I'll add that one of the (now known plagiarist) artists on the project is notorious for fishing for indie game art 'commissions' and then half-assing them and turning in terrible quality work months late.

Mighty No. 9 - ex-Capcom developer Keiji Inafune (Mega Man, Dead Rising) basically had his own Daikatana moment and thought he could carry this terrible game based on recognition and ripping off his own (superior) franchise
1737940416648.jpeg

Death Stranding - ex-Konami developer with delusions of grandeur thinks he's the next Stanley Kubrick by making a walking cutscene simulator with a retarded story

Undertale - faggot earthbound romhacker who read too many SP00KY creepypastas tries to make "muh deep and edgy" ripoff of his favorite game, and makes absolutely sure to force his gay and faggy worldview onto the player

I don't know much about this tbh, but it was Brianna Wu's game.
It pains me to say it but aside from technical issues, rather boring gameplay and the fact that large portion of the lore is in the manual it's actually not that awful. Also the villain is an AI that went insane because it was over-analyzing soy and became obsessed with it, which is quite funny.
And it doesn't reference troons in any way which is unthinkable in today's troon "art".
