As some of you may have heard, Disney is releasing a game called Disney Infinity. In it you get to play as famous Disney characters such as Jack Sparrow, Mr. Incredible etc. Not only that but you also get to create shit as well. However, you need to purchase little toys in order to play as some of these characters. With its older competition Skylanders still going strong, do you think that this whole "buy toys to unlock game content" will catch on even more? Would you consider trying them out?

It's like DLC, but it's right away and probably more than a few bucks per character. I'm not crazy about DLC but I get why people are, they're expansions that are usually released after the game. I think this whole Skylanders thing was so stupid it wasn't going to take off, but I was wrong. This whole toys thing strikes me as very greedy.

Gyromite and Stack-Up pretty much soured me permanently to any video games with toy tie-ins.

Video games are already getting expensive enough. Why willingly buy a game that requires you to keep throwing money at it? I mean, I'll get DLCs for games that I'm really enjoying or want to support, but to have to buy more tie-in products from the word go just turns me right off.

I work for one of the biggest retailers in the UK and we sell tons of toys, the Skylanders stuff is comparatively cheap (between £5 to £7 for the smaller figures if you shop around) and they're actually quite well made. Now most kids will have a games console and most kids will be into some form of collectable toy, so all it's really doing is combining to two. If little Timmy wasn't into Skylanders, he'd be into something else, like WWE or Power Rangers so the Mum and Dad's money would still be getting spent on something or other.

We got the Infinity stuff in yesterday, and that shit's about Twice the price of the Skylanders toys. Seems being a Disney branded toy automatically bumps up the price.

Are they still making Skylanders? Or, for those working retail where they stock the toys, do the toys still sell?

They have three games out:

Skylanders: Spyro's adventure

Skylanders: giants

and Skylanders: swap force is coming out soon

They have an entire shelf in the video game sections, it's complete bullshit.

Oh yeah, they sell. Computer games stores buy and sell second hand figures as readily as second hand games too.

I think it's a crazy genius concept and they should be making a crap ton of money selling a combination of two things kids love: having stuff and video games.
I personal enjoy skylanders mostly because the toys aren't too expensive amd the game is pretty fun when you play it with a friend or even alone.
I recently bought a Disney Infinity figure for my friend and we tried out the co-op. it was interesting and the world was pretty big and they have several of these worlds to explore. I especially liked the part were you build studf though, I made a sprite of old timey Mario!
It's probably not something I'd buy and play for myself though, the figures are too expensive.
