I'm more inclined to believe cash grab, rwbys last season did not get any traction outside of the 30 seconds of popularity homophobic ruby got. It's more likely to drum up attention and support for them to greenlight the next season of Rwby considering the lengths the production team gaslights it's audience into show support, "there's so much story left we promise we'll finish soon we just need

It got some attention due to Blake&Yang's kiss, which RWBY then started posting it on their twitter as a "historic moment" and due to RWBY having one of their main characters essentially kill themselves by being tormented into thinking that suicide is the better option (coupled with abuse for around 3 volumes).
