Let's be honest. Bolt Action is the current closest 40k killer. It's a game that people actually play and collect, in part because it doesn't try to be 40k. I can go to a FLGS and see a whole shelf dedicated to it, which is more than can be said about Battletech, X-Wing, TC, etc.

Kind of. It was going to happen for sure because as a licensed property they can't just make up new shit for the game. But it wasn't the sequel trilogy, it was x-wing 2.0 and telling their entire playerbase to get fucked and have to re-buy all of the cards(that were also overpriced) along with updating the bases(more expense) that killed it so quickly(went from having a tournament scene to being dead in about 2 weeks). It's also why they didn't want to announce the big update for SW Legion as a "2.0" but have still hit a problem trying to convince people to re-buy the same storm and clone troopers for the 4th time in different sculpts. Even if the sequel trilogy wasn't shit, they'd still run out of sculpts eventually anyway. For Marvel Crisis Protocol, at least there's been enough various costumes and shit for characters over the years that they can(assuming Marvel allows it) go into that well for sculpts that are interesting rather than needing Luke or Han in a different shirt.

Which hilariously got called the "citadel paint killer" and "this shows GW is fucking up" in thumbnails. The reality is it's meaningless since GW never produced sets like that before and has no reason to going forward.

I see more people playing battletech at stores in my area than Bolt Action. They're probably on par with eachother and it's going to depend on region. TC doesn't have retail product, x-wing is dead(isn't even being supported by the company anymore). Battletech still has people playing it in spite of what CGL seems to be trying to do to it.

Dude, GW has marketed to kids since the 80s. Also a pile of kids running in terror from a necron warrior isn't exactly noble bright happy rainbows. From a purely business standpoint, no politics from either side, GW is a business with a customer base. That customer base over time is basically a leaky bucket. Customers will either die, age out of it, get bored over time, etc. and leave. If you as a business do nothing to add new customers to that group, you're fucked. This business has been around so long that it has a couple generations of customers now that are parents and some even grandparents that are still interested and may want to get their kids/grandkids into it. Why should GW not provide a product for them? And again, GW has marketed it's products to children since the 80's(you can see kids pictured if White Dwarf articles about playing into the early 2000s).

Because the majority of the fanbase just doesn't give a shit. No one cares about Arch's 20 hours of video covering Vraks and the Badab war. In the podcast that I mentioned listening to the other day one of the people on it(with a ridiculous Italian accent) was crying that he spent hours doing "research" about the badab war to make an hour plus long video but someone else's 15 minute video gets more views. That's probably because no one wants to listen to the ridiculous accent, and partly because no one wants to listen to someone regurgitate 20-30 year old lore for an hour. People were buying DKOK forgeworld armies, people weren't buying Steel Legion even though GW kept it available for years, and even did a made to order run of them a couple years ago. If shit doesn't sell, you stop selling it.

Does anyone that says "the grimdark is going away" have any serious examples? Frankly, I dont think they actually read the novels if they really believe that. Ive been trying to keep up with new black library releases, and I can say pretty confidently that GW writers have stayed overall consistent compared to the books Im reading trying to catch up to modern 40k. Whether the writers are good is another matter.

On a better note: does anyone have any good STL files/know where to find STL files for model rips? I know there was that one guy that got nuked off patreon by GW's lawyers, but I cant find anything by him or anyone else doing it.

There isn't going to be a 40K killer. Not at this stage. You've got 30+ years of fluff (as retconned as it is) to compete with and, even if the advent of digital sculpting has given us asset flips sat on rocks, a fairly unique aesthetic. The rules to the game don't matter. 9th and 10th have proven that. 40k has more than its fair share of secondaries that have never even rolled a dice who will keep the IP afloat for decades to come.

The time for the 40K killer has been and gone. That was back in the 90s. What are the options? X-Wing? A fuck you to the fans that GW would be proud of. Star Wars: Legion? Cards and tokens: The Game. Star Wars as a direct competitor to 40K is dead in the water anyway, even if you forget that Star Wars as a franchise hasn't been any good since 1980. Marvel? Completely played out to all but the most ardent neckbeard. You're not going to get people that pretend to buy the comics to invest in a tabletop game. Gunpla? A massively wasted opportunity by not basing it on the model kits themselves. We all know about Trench Crusade, so theres no need to beat that drum again. Whats left? Bolt Action? Potentially, but the idea that somebody, somewhere might unironically like playing one of the Axis forces is enough for some people to shit the bed. There are plenty of smaller games out there that (mechanically at least) shit all over 40K, but they're never going to beat it because they either don't have mass appeal or lack the financial backing to break out of their niche.

Whatever we've got; we're stuck with it. Customer churn is going to force GW's hand into making increasingly more retarded decisions to feed the beast, and people will still lap it because (for the foreseeable future at least) its the only game in town. Thats your grimdark future. Just pray your chosen faction doesn't get a range refresh.

He was doing a break down of who plays what faction (orcs players are based dads, guard players are history buffs, etc.) and he made an off hand joke how people play sisters because they want to dommed by kinky nuns with guns and are probably into feet. But it kept getting brought up in other videos. In his defense, it was very much a "I didn't do it" boy moment. It's also funny to see sisters players get defensive in the comments.

And for completeness, the podcast that got me asking about Steel Legion was Northan Exile and Mordian Glory with the topic of "GW is burned out on 40k". It's 2 hours, and I only listened to 20-30 mins.

And to be clear, I don't like Northen Exile. Nothing against the guy personally, but like inner circle and arch, there's only so much whining about GW you can do before you should just move the fuck on. Also many of his "hobby nightmare" videos sound fake to me.

Ah that explains it. Yeah, I don't normally listen to Arch either(he's a fucking idiot) and Northern Exile isn't dumb but his shit is a bunch of creative writing prompts that wouldn't have happened in a damned 1970s sitcom I'll even come up with an example of every Northern Exile story

Outer Circle is a fuckwit who on his own channel explained how he hadn't played 40k since 2014 because a TO at a local tournament pissed him off so it wasn't even GW's fault. At least he seems to have stuck to 30k on his channel for the past year or so, that he presumably actually plays instead of complaining about the number of rivets on 40k model reveals(I think it was when beast snaggas got shown off he complained about rivets).

Mordian Glory does play, but his channel has also devolved into regularly bitching about GW. However the idea that GW is burned out on 40k when the company is flush with cash having 40k as their main product line, and setting records damn near every year for most of the past decade, is a fucking joke. At least he's tried moving on in his content adding Bolt Action to the mix rather than just becoming yet another GW salt channel(I also saw his video calling out majorkill's steroid shilling, so that's also a plus). Mordian Glory says he's paid zero attention to any lore from GW since the launch of 8th and only just very recently looked at the primaris wiki page. Now he admits he's not a lore guy, but someone's opinion about the lore who hasn't looked at the lore in 8 years is irrelevant.

Bingo. But when you make a career out of it while not even playing the game you can get in the pit. I'm against shoehorning niggers and women into things as much as the next man, but most of the stuff these clowns complain about are nothingburgers or they are just shouting into the void.

For example, whether you like it or not, you will live to see female space marines. Its going to happen and no amount of hashtags or clickbait is going to stop it. The germ of the idea is already there with the Stormcast. Female space marines won't make a dent in things. People will say they'll boycott, but they won't, they're too addicted, and even if they do they'll still feed into the IP by bitching about it on social media, giving GW free advertising. When they do arrive, you don't have to play them. Not unless they create an explicitly female unit with its own stat line (which will be the meta for a week or so to help get boxes off shelves), and even if they do; thats what kitbashing is for. If troons can clear out my inventory of female heads for their affronts before God, people wanting to RETVRN can just consult their bits box.

The thing that pisses me off about the prospect of female space marines isn't that they're contrived, its that you've already got two exclusively female factions. One of which is neglected more than a nigger at Christmas; The Sisters of Silence. Just read Inferno (ignore the tourists in the artwork) and look at their lore, gear and unit choices. You have got a faction there which is more lore consistent than Custodes in the 40K setting and would make Imperial Agents worth playing again (yes, bring back the soup).

As an aside, why are we pretending like female space marines haven't happened yet when we already have femstodes? Custodes are just beefed up space marines but they are space marines. This is like pretending that primaris marines are totally unique because they aren't first born marines. It feels like people keep talking about it's coming rather than that shit already happened months ago. If you're really invested in the argument having female custodes is far worse because of course the women has to be the absolute best of the best because men are dumb and stinky. Really feels like showing up to the battle after the city's already been bombed.

The point I'm trying to make is that what is "worth complaining about" is different for everybody. Not saying you can't hate them, but they definitely have at least some involvement in the hobby. There's no way GW hate watching is profitable enough for someone with literally no involvement in the hobby to do as a job.

I really fail to see what the difference is between custodes and space marines. They're just superer super soldiers. I get they're better, faster, stronger, and have the best toys but they really are just space marines but better. If you want to argue that they have more authority than other space marines or have special privileges then yes, they don't operate like space marines. But if you say they're just better space marines you wouldn't be wrong.

People do obviously care about femstodes if they still talk about it. I don't think it's that people stopped caring. I think it's that most people said everything that needed to be said. Honestly this forum is the only place where I've seen people freak out so much about other people talking about femstodes other than reddit. Back to my original point, I get to you it's dumb and isn't worth talking about. To other people it is, and it's not worth getting upset over.

its actually what baffled me about the decision, i was fully expecting the new model custodes got to be female or atleast have a female head, but nope, then i expected the warhammer plus models, the store anniversary models or the convention exclusive models to be a female custodes, nope.

they didnt even have one of their artists churn out a piece of official artwork of a female custodes when they were posting on twitter about how custodes have always had female members since the founding of the 10,000.

and thus the rage merchants died down, because its hard to make content out of a few lines in a codex, a short story and a twitter post.
