Weird fandom "pathologies"

So there's this phenomenon I've been running into as long as I was aware of the concept of fandoms (or really, internet forums).

And that's the weird pathologies, that always exist and seemingly have nothing to do with what the fandom/forum actually revolves around.

For example:

--A forum about Chip n' Dale's Rescue Rangers (the 1980s cartoon, not the 2022 movie) but for some reason everyone there is an extreme Bible-thumper and for some reason expect this of the entire community even though it has nothing to do with the show itself.

--A forum that's totally into MS-DOS era RPGs, but also for some reason most of the members have a weird obsession with old pulp fantasy novels (Andre Norton and the like) and will hate you if you're not into that kind of stuff. At least here there's kind of a vague connection, but you're here to talk games, not literature.

--A forum themed around building gaming computers, but for some reason everyone there is also really into dirt bikes and if you ever admit you know nothing about dirt biking, they think you're faking your interest in computers as well.

I'm only making up one of those examples.

But seriously, this keeps happening. This weird tendency for all internet hangouts to have this random curveball where its like, something expected of you but it doesn't logically follow from the premise of the hangout, and at times even feels contradictory. Like its something God, the Devil, or the Universe itself just threw in there just to fuck with you.

You guys ever have this happen or am I the only one?

The type of people into MS DOS gaming at all during it's peak would be the same people buying fantasy and sci fi novels. If you can't understand why that forum has an interest in other nerdy shit like RPGs then you need your own thread here. It's blindly obvious.

Shipper. I do not understand shippers at fucking all. Every community I see no matter how non-romance related it is there has to be shippers. Who looks at 1,000 pokemon and thinks Ash and Misty are the most interesting aspect of that?

Agree. Dawn is way hotter than Misty [immediately gets carted off]

(.... my little joke there probably hinted at the real answer....)

And yeah the DOS thing was a bad example, though I think such a pathology would make more sense if this was still the 1980s, versus the 2000s or 2010s, or if the place was some sort of private hangout for a small group of friends.

Don't go planning a thread for me yet. I'm still planning a webcomic... wait for it to be inevitably terrible first!

They're DOS gamers, what decade do you think these people care about? They're either old white guys from Europe who like old games and have nostalgia for them or they're trannies. It's the 90's kids thing for... DOS gamers. I used to listen to lots of DOS game podcasts but they all ended up inviting trannies onto them. Sucks because old computer software is interesting.

In my experience, few of them. The majority of them are too busy thinking about fucking Vaporeon.
I hate you and all the other dog fuckers ruining Eevee evolutions. Flareon is hotter.

Why do you frequent a forum for Chip'n'Dale?
What is there even to discuss to fill a whole forum with? Lusting for Gadget?
Did, not do--note the past tense. I'm remembering a forum I was on like 25-30 years ago.

Whole point is I'm noticing how long this has been happening and I'm wondering why its a recurring thing... and if its happened to anyone else.

EDIT: My memory is that the Rescue Rangers community was one of those that was maintained by fanworks. Like they would treat a new fanfic like a major event, and there were several that were so popular they were basically canon as far as fans knew. One guy IIRC did a freaking webcomic and the place positively erupted.

And yes, a lot of the regulars were blatantly hot for Gadget. The funny thing though was that because the place was so "Christian" they really did a lot to hide or sanitize it.

There's this forum dedicated to laughing at retards and autistics, but most of the members are very far right, even Nazi esque at times, it's crazy...
I think I've heard of them. They're the guys who killed the author of SNES9x, right?

Fandoms are for socially desperate dweebs and thus I'm sure there's a predominant core group of people who've been around a while or who have otherwise set the attitude of the group, then all the other tards who want to fit in show up and are like "Oh, I guess I should be into those things too"

It's one of the kind of shitty things about the internet, discussion of hobbies or interests is almost always dominated and directed by the most autistic members with the most overwhelming and specific fixations.
Unless more moderate people aggressively assert the right to participate without buying in completely, it'll just turn retarded and alienate any even semi-normal people.

You say that, but even hardcore moderates turn autistic eventually. Focusing all discussion (or even most discussion) in one space on something specific for longer than like a month or two will do that to you.
(I agree otherwise.)

I kinda want to lurk there now as I have a passing interest in both of those. anyone got a link?
(you can PM it to me if you're concerned about privacy)

People who are into Omori 9 times out of 10 are mentally deranged (no thanks to being alphabet folxxx) and have far too many skeletons in their closet for being attracted to virtual, mentally fucked minors.

A lolcow forum that's also a major White supremacist hangout with a million threads of people asking about how we're going to save the world for Jesus.

And yeah, I can't think of a ton of specific examples of extremes like that (but I mostly rape a single forum with my autism), but there are some niches in here, like there's way more people interested in history and in Paradox games than there should be. Why? Maybe because conversation like that is just self-sustaining and although it is costless to start topics, people will generally not make them unless they know it will already fit in somehow. If the people also have more to talk about in terms of variety, surely they will be more invested in the forum and use it more too, right? Your dirt bike enthusiasts may not put near as much energy into just a dirt bike or just a computer forum as if they could do both.

99% of why I like forums and not platforms like Reddit is that even if I don't actually remember the personalities of most of you, I do recognize names, recognize some personalities, certainly recognize a general tone to the site, and feel like it's participation in an actual community. So I prefer to make a thread on something even if there's a high probability of it being a dud even though I could find a dedicated community for it where it may be the only thing they talk about.

I also see the emergence of hobby circlejerks in real life social groups, like workplaces, too. It seems like most of the dudes at my work are into soccer and weightlifting and little else.

One of the BEST things about the Internet.

Someplace dedicated to discussion of video games (or a subculture of them) that is viciously dedicated to social justice causes and will ban you on-sight if you say retard or make a typo that misgenders someone? It's more likely than you think!

Yeah, that's annoying. Thing is we know why that happens, so its not entirely out of left field.

Now if you find a video game forum where for some reason you're expected to love eating bats, now we're talking.

Go to a Sonic fan forum. There you'll be expected to love eating out bats.

I think that some of it stems from the fact that a lot of those communities have been around for a long time and have the same people still using them for 10, 15, 20+ years. So it becomes like an enclave. Sooner or later newer people stop joining very much or sometimes entirely. While this does preserve board culture it also creates a hivemind. Stuff like this can literally destroy your community. Because as older members stop posting or even die off the forum will die with it. Because you scared off all the newbies by expecting them to be younger versions of yourself.

With younger fandom communities they have the opposite problem. Too many loonies joining at once with very specific ideas about things. It doesn't help that meme culture and viral videos can draw a ton of attention to something. Also trannies. Trannies every time. I'm afraid to join any forums now because I don't suck girldick and I'm afraid I'll be banned for not stepping on eggshells. I don't want to deal with them. KF is the only place where it's not a factor.

I used to be a part of some fandom communities back in the early 2000s. So back then you still had the individual fansites for anime and you had AniPike to help you binge them like people now binge Netflix. Sites were often part of webrings and you could spend hours diving in through those too. It was a portal of "kawaii desu sugoi Tasuki-sama-chaaaaan!" 😙

Given the state of anime now, that kind of weeby autism is tame. I don't even want to know what anime communities are like now.

And then they wonder why there's only a handful of active members and no one new has joined in two years.
