Finally got around to reading the Penpal book
View attachment 7884346
When I bought this book I had one fear, and that was my opinion of it would be "only buy this book if you REALLY like the penpal story"
Sadly that turned out to be true.
This book is a very fleshed out and better written version of the original story...but the original story is still very good and FREE, Also there's nothing new, no new reveals, no new chapters, no new characters it's just the same story.
At the end of the day it's still a r/nosleep story and you can feel it sometimes.
If you could get the book for really cheap or even free it is the best way to read it but other than that save your money and just listen to your favorite creepy pasta channel read it.
I didn't even know it was any different than what you got originally, just in a physical copy.
Still, one of my favorite internet stories

Penpal was legit good. It was very well done, and I personally can’t think of any other story about this very specific horror situation.
It’s one the most realistically terrifying stories as well, it’s just a guy remembering weird things that sometimes happened when he was a kid and realizing that he was being stalked by a pedophile for years. No supernatural anything, no cults or demons or monsters, just a straight up predator hiding in the bushes.

The second story was a bit boring but I think it was fine for as short as it was, and the stories and hypotheticals it brought up were great. Meat's wild stories are always slightly suspect as to whether or not they're exaggerated or even mostly/completely made up but hearing the wild bullshit that he's done that he's just completely forgotten about makes them so much more believable

When the second person showed up in the story I thought it was going to take on a direction a bit like the Love Town chapter of Library of Ruina where people are trapped on a train for 10,000 years and can't die, which leads to them developing a new body horror based society and religion

Oh, that sounds neat, I'll just google that and....

Library of Ruina is an indie deck-building turn-based role-playing game developed and published by South Korean studio Project Moon.

My disappointment is tangible. I can feel it physically weighing on my shoulders.

Just to save you playing the game since that chapter is very different from the rest of the story beyond it being misery porn: There's a company with warp tech and their most popular service is their warp trains that will get you anywhere you want to go in ten seconds flat. What they neglect to mention is that during those ten seconds you spend 10,000 years in hell and just forget once you're back in reality while your mind is transplanted into a fresh copy of your original body. During that section of the game two doctors who know about what happens want to take advantage of the fact that people can't die to perform highly unethical surgeries in an attempt to create a love-powered supersoldier capable of defeating the library

To add a bit more detail to what's going on in the pics:
The people in the middle section of the third pic have lost their shit and are either trying to kill themselves or the people around them to no avail while the people who are still hanging in there have run to other cars to try and hide

I didn't find a picture of it but in the first class car everyone is intubated and in a medically induced coma that they won't wake up from even if they get torn out of their pods because their metabolism doesn't progress. Everyone in first class knows the truth of what happens and pays extra so they don't have to suffer even if they won't remember it

The reason they're all mutated into a single mass isn't because they're mutated, but they've ground each other into paste and then their undying bodies are basically trying to heal, but all the goop is mixed together so their bodies are just growing together. The last two pics are the super soldier thing I mentioned. They're an engaged couple who the doctors convinced that if they got strong enough that they'd be able to escape. Rather than randomly growing together they were surgically combined. They were removed from the train before their bodies got reset and thrown into the meatgrinder that is the library

First story was okay, though I wasn't listen too closely. Second story was underwhelming for two reasons: 1. nosleep guidelines forcing the total cop out of an ending that the narrator could have done literally at any time, and 2. the premise is lacking. This guy must be Buddha reborn to survive several months on a plane doing nothing but sit there and watch movies, when the average person would start getting antsy in a few hours, let alone days in the same situation. Plus besides the flight attendants and "the captain" there's nothing else going on. No real threat to content with other than the horror of being stuck on a plane forever. I get the sense the author himself didn't even know what he wanted to do with the story... but I can't prove it.

Story remined me of this other one I read a while back, "Something is seriously wrong on our flight." Same premise—dude is on a plane, something is off but no one seems to notice, and all he does is talk to the flight attendant and be intensely paranoid. Also this other one, Stuck at work that also deals with a timeloop and purgatory state, and does it in a far shorter timespan. Really if that isn't an indictment of how mid this story is I don't know what else would. How would you even go about "fixing" it that doesn't overhaul it so much it may as well be a new story entirely.

Also it's funny they mentioned MH370. I guess there's still some allure around it for some people, but once you read about the pilot suicide theory... it makes too much sense. It's actually kind of extraordinary how someone could go through all the effort to do such a thing, and to a plane full of people no less. That'd make for a better premise than what we got here.

I know they said they’ll read more SCPs and there’s a lot of amazing ones I think they’ll genuinely love, but unfortunately I have a feeling they’ll only ever read the well known ones.
An SCP blind bag episode where entries are picked by RNG would be pretty amazing honestly.

Watching the new Creepcast, the stories are meh but the banter is excellent, especially with how they diss the tranny jannies of no_sleep. Probably said the word pedophilia like 20 times.

I don't really get why there are no boards for standard short horror, since I can understand wanting to keep to the format, and a lot of hacks just do the bare minimum.

In the middle of the second story, it should have been the plane above an endless plane. It would have been interesting had it been like post nuclear attack and the horror that the pilots don't want to risk the plane as logg as they can. But with 30 hours it's clearly supernatural in nature.

Kinda funny a lot of those horror stories can be boiled down to either "I was sexually abused/groomed and didn't realize it" (the favourite redditor excuse for being a terrible human being), or "I can't fit into society through no fault of my own".

Ruina is good shit. Peak SKorean dystopia with autistic lore. Gameplay is good, it's a puzzle game rather than card collecting.

I think it's funnier that they don't think that the jannies are troons so when they talk about ns's obsession with pedo shit they don't see the connection.

Wow what a shit ending to a shit story. It might as well have ended on him being there forever that would at least have some sort of karmic merit.

The big miss in the story is that part of the horror of airplanes is the people there that you are forced to inhabit the same space as you. A baby screaming, a fatass eating noisily, a couple not stopping to talk... Just those things alone over a period of time will drive you insane. And on the other hand you can have the protagonist try to break the script - Sleep over the seats or in the luggage compartment, maybe using that way to find a solution how to get out.

Yeah but also pedophilia is the easiest way to get reddit edginess and sympathy without trying too hard.

I like extreme horror literature, so my view is that I don’t care what you include I care why you included it.
For example, the insane torture in The Black Farm is for an entirely different purpose than in Cupcakes. The former is to show our main character that the pain he ended his and his wife’s lives over is nothing compared to what’s possible, and the he must find a way to continue through it for people other than himself. The latter is a splatterhouse fanfic and it was very fun and ridiculous because it was about ponies.
Then we get into it’s just there for cheap edge it comes off stupid. It’s like The Butterfly Effect having just the most insane shit for literally no reason. Or the Sewer Orgy™️ from IT. Or parts of Woom like the little trigger warning discussion the two characters had. I can get your trying to say and go for, but it just doesn’t work well when you default to rape being shorthand for ‘worst thing you can imagine’.

Kinda sucks how he changed his opion on the ending of MHE from the author going back and saving his inner child to the author summoning the antichrist or something

May just be focusing on the in-universe lore for the verbal walkthrough rather than the deeper literary analysis that's possible. At least that's the sense I got from it.

That was exactly what my opinion was after watching the Creepcast episode. Instead of doing the one thing that MHE got mad at him about, praying to God to be saved, he used the powers she/it gave him to "free" himself. I feel vindicated I guess, maybe I'll watch the episode to see his reasoning.

The ending itself felt off as if there was a rewrite because the author didn't like where MC was taking the story. The kid saves himself by using the magic of Satan to bring himself from the future? It even makes a parallel that he's his own personal Christ-like figure. It feels like a giant trap. The main MC never finishes grappling with the fact that because the devil exists, God should exist too so the only conclusion I can come to is that he's taken the route to worship himself which would be falling right into MHE's hands.

It's possible this is the whole point (MHE gets the maddest when kid MC starts praying to God which should be a clue that's what kid MC was supposed to do, rely on God. She also gets angry when he tries to summon his parents, the closest thing a child can conceive of as God and something outside himself. So instead he takes MHE up on her offer to alter reality to save himself.

If the ending was intentional in a "I'm a reddit athiest, I don't NEED God because fuck dad!" kind of way, than the story is fundamentally flawed, but I'm glad there's enough leeway that I'm not sure which way it leans.

Nero was the last of his dynasty and most of what was written about him was made many years later during the rule of a different dynasty wanting to build up legitimacy for themselves by disparaging past rulers. Wendi going at this completely at face value instead of taking everything with a grain of salt really hurts this video. He needs to fire his team, they suck at their job.

Nero agrees that it was all slander and she is an amazing song writer.

Tbf, if you managed to dethrone your own dynasty without being conquered, you are either too stupid or too trusting.
