What do people find appealing about Umbrella Academy?

I need someone to explain to me how anyone can like this show. I'm fine with people liking shows that are considered bad or niche or simply not popular, but people heap praise on this show like crazy.

Its fucking awful, the plot is confusing and makes no sense. The pacing of the show is disjointed and doesn't flow well. The characters are two dimensional and boring as hell. I tried to follow along with what was going on but it was honestly too boring and poorly structured for me to bother paying close attention.

Inb4 "zomg you just like marvel movies and can't understand deep shows". I hate Marvel and I watch a wide variety of shows and some of them have very slow build up or have complex plots. Hell if I can follow the plot of Chrono Cross I should be able to handle this show.

Can anyone explain what they find so good about this show and why its so highly praised?

feel like the plot was fairly straight forward. dysfunctional super hero family. lost member of the family returns, tells family apocalypse is coming, they try to find source of apocalypse, find a family member is the source, try to resolve it.

what's the issue

It's part of the Bojack-style "we laugh but depression and traumas are srs business, also parents bad" class of shows that millennials crave like meth addicts crave drugs. If you don't go "omg I also used to try so hard to satisfy my parents' ambitions, like Gorilla Dude, this is so deep and sad" you are missing the point of the show.

Haven't seen it, but I just chalk it up to capeshit and Netflix are popular. I imagine it's gonna be promoted even more when season 3 comes cause it will be the first one since Elliot Page transitioned. Netflix, journos, and twitter checkmarks will hail it as the best thing ever, even if it's just all the characters taking a massive shit onscreen.

But since it's Netflix, it's likely the 3rd season will be the last, so hopefully it will be temporary.

The people who didn't know about it before the show like it because it's edgy capeshit and it's got Ellen Page in it.

The people who did know about it are hipsters who read some comic by Gerard Way and flocked to it.

It's "subversive" and "too real" and the main cast are all loser 20-somethings except for the one old man/child so people relate because "powers" don't equate to "hero".

I'm not sure; I've also never seen it and expressed no interest to see it, so I'm guessing.

One of the shows I was forced to watch at my friend's.
I don't really get the hype myself OP, it's pretty decent mindless entertainment, and I feel the comedy is probably what the tv adaptation excels at, but that being said, it's just "decent" however you cut it. I personally feel the comics tell a better story so far.

Season 3 is gonna be pure shit now that Ellen Page has become a man and Vanya hopefully will be written out of the show. The rest of the cast is fine, she's the weakest part of ths whole show and every scene with Klaus in it has been a treat.

Season 1 was great, Season 2 was meh (due to Vanya's lesbian arc). Season 3 will be pure Poz cause Netflix is gonna fuck it all up.

I vaguely know someone who likes to talk about it a lot. A milder version of Chris talking about Sonichu perhaps.

The fact that this person like the show is enough to turn me off it. I've never seen more than a trailer.

"you dont like deep shows"
I think that's the problem. The show isnt deep, lol. It's just a quirky show with a lot of fan service about characters with cool powers.
If you want something similar to umbrella academy "kids with powers" that's more edgy you can watch "misfits"
But yeah - umbrella academy is just some easy fan service show where you can pick your favorite kid with powers and root for them.

Why I like the original comic: it was surprisingly half way decent when I was expecting something completely awful, and I liked its melancholy feel.

The show imo is way too flashy and my suspension of disbelief is ruined because its harder to take seriously in an non illustrated format; and the changes that were made (many white characters became mutts, events were combined to streamline things, Paige is a tranny) bugged the shit out of me.

I like the show. But I'm not looking forward to season three. Now that ellan is a tranny and shitty reviewers are going to say it's special and important because of that.

Also what was the point of making Vanya a lesbian (Paige being one) ? I mean we already had a likable gay character in Klaus. I why ruin it!

I really enjoyed the comics, but the TV show looks like utter shite so I avoided it.
