SP was good up until 15 or so years ago but it's gone the way of the Simpsons and Matt and Trey are old men now. It really should finish up.
The last few seasons have been hit and miss.
I think it's moreso a symptom of the common division in politics today.
South Park is mostly nuanced but being nuanced is almost impossible these days.
I think the next season will be the return to form (hopefully) as they've indicated it will be a return to adventure/episodic format rather than directly basing episodes or seasons around politics itself rather than using their story to make fun of politics. I'm also convinced they are intentionally keeping themselves on TV as South Park is still a pretty powerful voice in English speaking culture and as its been said, once it's gone from TV we'll never be allowed anything like it again.
I think their heart is still in South Park (see the South Park Anniversary Concert) but the current climate probably makes them a lot more jaded than it did before.
I hope we get a remastering or remake of the original South Park movie (Still keeping it a Musical) and the very last scene of South Park being a new version of Little Mountain Town but with as many of the more known South Park characters. Maybe a time foward to them as ad- holy shit it is becoming the Simpsons.
Literally typing the above is the same shit I said about the Simpsons 15 years ago when the Movie was supposed to be the end.
If this next season doesn't land well like the last few have been iffy (although bad South Park is still better than most show's best) then I hope they make a Musical as the ending and just put out ocassional episodes covering topics and events they actually care about
