What is going on with political Christian conservatism in the U.S?

Compared to the Christian conservative politics of the Bush years in the 2000's there has been quite the change and most of you will agree to that. I don't know if a more reactionary streak developed in this population and their representatives after the great recession (which fucked so many economically) but after the 2000's things seemed to get much spicier.

What is going on here?

... The most socially conservative thing I remember Bush doing was the stem cell research veto in 2006. What a laugh that is compared to today.

Short answer: Wheels came off, people are mad and drawing harder lines, further apart, and daring each other to be the one that crosses them.

The Patriot Act prior to the stem cell research veto was very divisive, along with the "no fly" lists. The effects of those began the political cracks and governmental distrust that have widened today. One should never get too comfortable with their government, that makes hard to eradicate it in Minecraft, when the time comes, if you like it too much.

You have to remember that 15-20 years ago, nearly every mainstream politician in the US was against gay marriage including Obama, Biden, the Clintons, etc. It wasn't until Obama's second term that the culture turned hard left and what you've been observing is the reaction against that. One should think of the 2000s in context, it was a much more socially conservative culture than what we have today.

The 2000's being ''socially conservative'' is quite the stretch. Not all the way around - socially conservative in government, sure, but not in culture. Pop culture promoted hyper-sexuality pretty heavily back then and even ''gay's'' had their media moments with ''queer eye'' and other such shows even back then.

You could say the same thing about Madonna in the 80s but the culture was still more socially conservative back then than it is now, objectively.

And as far as the gays, they go from 'having a moment' with a show only watched by women to trying to normalize trans kids and athletes in 10 years? And you wonder why there's a visceral reaction against that? It's normal

The Christian bakery thing understandably brought about a tribal streak. Lines were drawn and spears sharpened. I was on the verge of joining the Big L Libertarian Party before, but that event revealed that they didn't really care about religious freedom and that Christians have only enemies.

The only "Christian conservative" issue I can really think of that has any influence whatsoever in society is abortion. This isn't because it's necessarily more popular now among Christians but because Republican politicians use it as an easy way to motivate the religious part of their voterbase since all the other Christian stuff like gays or creationism have been politically dead for the better part of a decade. It's also a really dumb issue to keep focusing on since Roe v. Wade being overturned just cost the Republicans a bunch of seats in the 2022 Midterms by getting zoomers/millennials to the polls.

Other than that, maybe tradwives? But that always just struck me as attention whoring by conservative women since even though "conservative women who like being stay at home moms and doing feminine things" existed back then, it didn't have a name and wasn't a "movement."

I don't count opposition to gender ideology or those creepy elementary school sex-ed books as "Christian conservatism" since you don't need to be a Christian to oppose that. That sort of garbage was nigh-universally opposed in the 00s outside of maybe the freakiest parts of California and even back then you'd find a lot of liberal soccer moms not wanting their 12 year olds reading books with drawings of teenage boys giving out blowjobs.

The average song on the radio today and the image/music video of the people making them makes "My Humps" and similar garbage from the 00s look positively prude. The only troon on mainstream TV in the 00s was Mrs. Garrison on South Park and there weren't obligatory gays in every single show.

Given my own experiences watching the Christian Right in the US, it's like the exact opposite from what it used to be. Back then, you'd see pastors burning Harry Potter books, now you see troons essentially doing the same thing for different reasons. It's like we have a woke version of the Satanic Panic now.

Concerning what Fundamentalist/Evangelical Protestant types are getting up to today, I've seen a lot of them on social media going through these stages the past decade:
  1. Obama's gonna herd us all into FEMA camps!
  2. Obama didn't REALLY step down, and he's actually running the show behind the strings!
  3. Trump is the hero of mankind! (Completely ignoring the First Commandment, interestingly enough)
  4. God is gonna bring the whole house of cards down and expose Biden and Harris as pedo demons!
Interestingly, I have not seen ONE of them saying "See, we warned you" when it comes to things like letter people stuff widespread among Zoomers/gay porn in school libraries and the FBI investigating parents for going to school board meetings to address these things. You'd think these people would come out of the woodwork to call it out, but they haven't; they're more wrapped up in "BIDEN'S GOING TO PRISON ANY DAY NOW, Q TOLD ME!" type thinking.

Probably a product of ignorance, Biden is the president and you can't get away from that whichever state you're in but queer shit happening in schools in some liberal state? Yeah your average boomer isn't going to know about that.

There's not a garbage can sticker big enough for this post so I won't even try.

Young-Earth Creationism is mostly a thing among certain strands of American Evangelical Protestants. You don't find it much at all among American Catholics as the Church does not have an official stance the theory of creation or evolution (though some form of 'Guided Evolution' is arguably the most common stance held by Catholics, including myself). Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian friar, after all.
