Basically, what kind of computer do you own & use? Specs also welcome.

I'm currently using some garbage Ideapad (it has a fucking 1366x768 screen... that's 15 inches across) but I plan to upgrade my setup at the end of the summer using funds from my wagie job. The computer I'm looking to buy is probably gonna be a ThinkPad T580, just because ThinkPads are reliable machines that work. The cool part about it is that it has dual batteries that can have a combined capacity of 104 watt hours (most laptops are in the 45-55 range). It's pretty cheap too, at only $400 for a machine that came out in 2018. I'm excited to make it my future shitposting center.

I'm using basically that exact same model except it doesn't have the 10-key pad.

EDIT: actually it's a T520. Bought it refurbished a couple of years ago and apart from the battery it really has been super reliable with no problems at all. It's fine because I only use it at home anyway.

I've got an old lenovo desktop with an i7 4790 and an RTX3050, I think the wireless card is dying though because the interned speed is garbage so I tend to use my laptop for most things that aren't gaming.

I have a T495s - is this now a Thinkpad thread? Its got a Ryzen 7 3700u with 16gb RAM. Nice thing about a Ryzen is the iGPU blows anything intel have completely out of the water so you can do some light gaming on it too.

Mine's a skytech pre-built, as that's what I could afford at the time. It's got a Ryzen 3 1200 and a GTX 1050ti, and it's solid enough I can fuck around with my games, even if they're not in full 4K or whatever.

A custom build, my first, from 2017. I bought all the parts and a friend put it together for me. GTX 1070 Ti, seventh gen Intel i5, Samsung 850 1TB solid state, 16 GB of RAM (made by Corsair), MSI Z270 motherboard. Case is also Corsair. I made sure to have as many fans as I could. Spent a smidge over $1,500 all told.

Mine is a custom build. Originally bought in 2015, parts picked and assembled by a local guy running a computer store, it went through a whole bunch of changes and now the only parts that haven't been removed and/or changed are the case and the original hard drive.

The OG specs were:
- Core i5-4460
- 8GB DDR3 RAM
- GT 730

The original part list had a shit power supply that was fucking up and restarting the PC, and that got changed to a Corsair one which works to this day. I don't remember if I was the one to change that or the guy at the store, but after that I became more accustomed to messing with PC parts.

The next upgrades were:
- a change from a GT 730 to a GTX 1060 bought back in 2016 before the first crypto boom, that's still in the system
- an extra 2TB hard drive
- a 500GB SSD with a fresh Win 10 install
- a new CPU cooler
- extra stick of RAM
- replacement of the old RAM stick that died while trying to run GTA V
- a 1TB SSD for games

And most recently, the biggest upgrade of all, a brand new motherboard, CPU and RAM set. So the current specs are:

- Core i5-12400
- 16GB DDR4 RAM
- GTX 1060 6GB

And from those old parts I just made a second PC for hosting games or whatever.

I'm a retard so my friends helped pick out parts and assemble my custom for me so I don't know/remember all the bits.
  • 1080ti that got snagged before the crypto boom
  • Core i7-7700K
  • 24 gb of RAM, mixed sticks
  • 250GB SSD for the operating system and what ever else
  • 1 Western Digital 1TB hard drive
  • 1 Samsung SSD 2TB

CPU: AMD FX-6300
GPU: GeForce GTX 750-Ti
RAM: Dual-channel 16GB @1600 MHz

I've got some money saved up, so I was going to go (kind of) all out on building a new one, all the newest shit. A 3060-Ti, a 5800x (maybe a 5600x), 32GB of RAM at 3200 MHz, etc. Then I went to buy the GPU and CPU, and saw that they were both out of stock. Well, it was December (of 2020), so I figured they had sold out for the holiday season, or something. No big deal, I can wait. Two or three months pass, and they're still out of stock, so I check and see that there's a bunch of scalpers and crypto miners buying them all up. Then there's articles coming out about how the shortage might last until 2022. Turns out they were right. It's 2022, and I'm still stuck with this dying potato of a computer.

Here is my specs. Please note that this is a truly multi-use rig that is designed for WATT vs Performance vs Cost. All items we on sale when purchased. It screams all day and the max load is under 300Watts at any given time, but at the present moment as I type this it is running @ 100 watts or less.

1. CPU: Ryzen 5900OEM CPU. Reason BEST DAMN PERFORMACE vs WATTAGE.

2. GPU: AMD RX5700. Reason. BEST DAMNED GPU vs Price and incredibly great when undervoltage/underclocked.

3. 64GB OloY PC 4000 Blade Memory. Reason. SAMSUNG RAM + INCREDIBLE PRICE + QUALITY PRODUCT. Underclocked to PC 3600 @ 14-14-14-34 timings 7.8 latency compared to 7.5 latency if set @ PC4000

4. Samsung 860 EVO 500GB. Reason Better than the 870 overall. Primary OS/software goes here.

5. WD 2TB 7200 rpm hard drive. Reason quality storage.

6. ICY Dock Duo Swap carriage for both Storage Units. Reason. Hot Swappable at any given time.

MSI X570 A-Pro. Reason. To prove a fucking point that the asshole influencers on Youtube stated that this MB was Garbage. Weak and hot MOSFET design.

Answer. 33+ fucking years dealing with tech. A computer is the total package not just components slapped together. This MB is great if you know what you are doing. Proved the point of 3 years of no issues, especially heat. As long as you are not one of those overclocking people that overclocks everything, this motherboard is stable as hell.

7. Case Corsair 400r or 500r. Reason. IMHO one of if not the best case of its time. I swear by them and have several in storage to the day I die. They are just that good in giving me what I want, which is versatility, cooling ability and cost.

8. PSU Roswell 850watt 80+ Gold. Reason. Excellent tier 2 platform that uses Japanese capacitors. Since everything runs 300watts or less the PSU just hums along without taking any stress.

9. LG Blu Ray player. Reason. I play a lot of movies on my rig.

10. Pixeo PX329 32" monitor. Reason Excellent monitor. for it's size and price.

11. CPU Cooler Hyper T2 dual custom fan set up. Reason The CPU cooler is small (dual 92mm), its light, and it gets the job done @65 watts up to 130 watts. It = a 120mm single fan CPU but smaller and light and increases air flow in the rig.

12. 2, 140mm Artic 3 pin and a Corsair 120mm in the back. Reason. Artic just Rocks... period. Corsair is fine.

Total cost out the door, including the monitor is under $2000 or $72 per month @ 28 months. It is a shitload more if I part things out, but I'm not one of those guys.

This rig can do everything well including Overwatch @ 215fps+ Any type of video/music editing, streaming and so on.

This rig beats the shit out of a lot of rigs out there at the incredible wattage that it uses.

NOTE: As stated I know my tech. As stated I specialize in airflow management and will spend hours fine tuning my rig to keep things cool. And finally I do not believe in water cooling as IMHO it is a money sink for the eye candy. ALSO there is A LOT of fucking maintenance to those water cooling setups that I don't want to deal with.

This is a REAL Multimedia rig that will do everything that I want it to so for years to come. This is one of those investments I will do because I've done the research in the tech industry. So I know what I need to make things work.

The only reason for me building a new computer was because I had the opportunity to snag a dirt cheap Ryzen 1600AF, eleven of them were coming to my country.
That's the mystery Ryzen, it's a Ryzen 5 2600 with a stock clock lowered 200mhz and sold for peanuts(MSRP was like $95 or something). No one knows why they did that and I'm a sucker for good deals.

Having it in my hands meant that I had to buy the rest of the parts so I did. It's nothing exciting but it allows me to play Elden Ring at 1080p@60 so I can complain about it in the games forum.

My main rig specs:
CPU: Intel i5-12600K
Mobo: MSI Z690-A PRO DDR4
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
RAM: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3200
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX TITAN X
PSU: Corsair RM850x
Storage: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500 GB (Linux OS drive), Samsung 980 PRO 1 TB (games drive), 256 GB Sandisk SSD (dedicated Windows VM drive)
Monitor: ASUS ROG PG348Q 34" Ultrawide 3440x1440
Case: Coolermaster HAF 922
Sound: FiiO K3 USB DAC + Sennheiser HD 477 headphones
OS: Fedora Linux 36, with Win10 VM for gaming with GPU/USB passthrough
Internet: Fiber, 940 Mbps symmetrical

The CPU and motherboard replaced an i7-4790K and Asus Z97-A that died late last year (pretty sure it was the mobo that died). The GPU is a big bottleneck now, and I'll probably get around to replacing it this year now that GPUs are actually available again without having to resort to paying a scalper. The case is over 10 years old now but I see no need to buy one of the tempered glass hotboxes that pass for cases today. No RGB shit, the computer sits under my table anyway so I can't see it.

I bought a Tuxedo Polaris last year. It has all the specs and ability to upgrade parts as a gaming laptop without too many stupid LEDs or racecar design elements screaming to everyone in sight "THIS IS A GAMING LAPTOP". I don't even really play games. My last two computers were a Macbook, and some Dell, the former had all RAM soldered to the motherboard, and the latter had removable RAM, but you couldn't get to it without destroying the chassis.

3600x, 5700xt, 32gb of ram, and an aging B350 mobo. Unfortunately my 3600x has a defective memory controller which I only discovered recently. I'm thinking about RMAing it and upgrading my desktop to a 5700x/5800x.
