What was your religious upbringing?

I saw some people in the general chat discussing their religious upbringings, and it was suggested to me that I make a thread for this, so I will start with my upbringing. My parents were kind of Christian but rarely went to church. When we did, it was a non-denominational church, and I did have religious things like DVDs as a kid, but they were never really super religious. Something I think my dad has come to regret. What was your religious upbringing? Discuss it in this thread.

My dad is an outspoken atheist who mocked Christians at every chance he could when he was raising us. My mom is one of those "I don't believe in god but I'm spiritual and have seen ghosts" types. The first time I attended any type of religious ceremony (a funeral for my late step grandmother who was a Presbyterian) was when I was 28 years old. Never once went to church before that. Religion played literally no role in my life. Like literally zero.

Lutheran but really in name only. My parents never got deep into theology, in fact I didn’t even realize that Jesus is god until recently. I went into an edgy atheist phase when I was younger but now I just hope there’s something.

I'm a high priest in fucking your mom. We are so downtrodden by the powers that be, since your mom is jowly like a dog so it's almost bestiality. They call us monsters (all 58 of your mom's johns).

But I believe in it! Just like my father and his father (bc your mom is also old.)

typical nothing serious baptist and a tiny bit methodist. when i was a very little kid we would go to church some of the times, but my family was never got very deep into religious stuff. as for the Baptist and Methodist, my mom's family goes to a baptist church and when we lived out that way we went there. my dad's family goes to a methodist church and i have been to it a few times. honestly i couldn't tell you any differences between the two.

i stopped going to church at all by 11 and haven't been back since except for the case of a funeral or two.

Raised methodist, well at least as much as my family was.
I lack "belief" which puts me on the outside of all religions unless someone wants to enlighten me on a denomination or sect somewhere that suffers my type.
Unironic, it's my lack of belief, because it's an all encompassing lack that penetrates me in all aspects, that I hold on to religion and hold it in higher regard than most people in my position would.
Plus most of yall don't know how to act without religion that I think it's more fundamental to the human experience than simply some throw-away club.

Born and raised white trash, so never really went to church unless my grandparents took me with them when I stayed with them, who were southern Baptist. Outside of that only time I attended church was either for funerals or the occasional Christmas service. I think being in an environment where religion is a part of peoples lives, but not to the point where they're Bible thumpers; prevented me from being a edgy 2000s atheist in high school and gave me an appreciation for the traditions of religion while also still not actively being a believer.

militant atheist. anti theist,
my dad despised all forms of organized religion, He especially hated islam because of how restrictive it was of free expression and for being backwards in general.
once when i was young. i was walking behind him on the way to the mall and he told me, i wasn't a mulslim women and so i should walk beside him.
pretty much everyone in the last 4 generations of both sides of my family was an atheist, instead we had, freemasons, hippies, communists, esoteric post institutional spiritualists.

my family thought there was a guy, but i just didn't really see any evidence of a guy, there was a book too but lots of guys wrote and changed it all around and it could have been all made up because lots of other books are all made up. i dont know if there's a guy. theres no way I could know if there's a guy especially if he doesnt wanna come down and say "hey I'm here". so i dont think about any of it. if you think there's a guy that's neat, i hope your guy is real and you get everything you want

Parents divorced, dad won custody. Mom tried to get me into Catholicism when I was around her, but for the most part I was raised in a secular home. Became a Christian (Protestant) by my own choice at thirteen, was a devoted Christian for a while, fell away for eight years though I never stopped calling myself Christian, came back to Christ last year.

I was raised in a secular home. Both sets of grandparents were quite religious, but neither of my parents are. There was a time when I was probably 6 or so that we started going to my grandparent's church (to appease them) but it didn't last long. The new preacher they hired was fired within a year and we quit going. I really don't remember any of the teachings. I just remember my folks brought a duffel bag of toys for my siblings and I to play with to keep from getting bored.

As an adult, I don't really know what I believe. I used to be agnostic, more on the side of atheism but thought there was a possibility of God and an afterlife. Now, I don't think there's anything. I really hope I'm wrong but I don't think I am. I would love to be able to believe, I just can't anymore.

Good job everyone on not taking the bait.

I had this queued up for when someone complained I was doing "yo mama" jokes in a religion thread.
hated bc he told the truth, mama.png

OP, for a serious answer there are many Christianity, religion, and philosophy threads you can find. There are some real Christians here. You just need to lurk more.

You've been here less than a year don't get to tell people to lurk more.
Grew up Baptist, had an embarrassing fedora atheist phase in my teen years, am now agnostic.
This is a common theme I see on this forum. Seems like many people here including myself had an edgelord atheist phase in their teens. I used to go in Youtube comment sections and try and "debate" Christians like a fucking retard when I was like 12 years old. Now I'm agnostic teetering on the brink of agonist theism.

Hail Mary full of grace the lord is with thee father son holy spirit. Or something. I didn't pay much attention and I'm atheist now.
