Have you ever seen a bunch of people with similar avatars and wondered what the story was behind it? Here I'll try to shed some light on this phenomenon.
Puffertons
What are they?
They're pufferfish that are drawn to look like characters from other things, or are just themed in some way. These days, they're quite rare. They're the earliest avatar fad I'm aware of.
Where did they come from?
@BOLDYSPICY! drew them.
What's the story?
People were trolling a lolcow named Shaner. One thing led to another, and Shaner claims that he was in contact with some internet detective or some shit named Pinkington Pufferton. Boldy drew a joke picture of a pink pufferfish - purported to be the real identity of Pinkington Pufferton - and eventually started drawing Pufferton avatars for people on request. This may not be a totally accurate recollection of what happened, but it's close.
Pixel Pups/Pixel Puppers
What are they?
They're edits of a sprite from Rhythm Heaven.
Where did they come from?
@Desire Lines made them.
What's the story?
I don't think there was a story. He just started making them and everyone wanted one.
Human Hive edits/Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang edits
What are they?
They're edits of Sheng-Ji Yang, the leader of the Human Hive faction from Alpha Centauri. More specifically, they're edits of @HumanHive's avatar.
Where did they come from?
I'm not sure who did it first, but people just started making low-effort edits of his avatar more or less spontaneously.
What's the story?
After @HumanHive joined the forums, there was a sudden wave of nostalgia for Alpha Centauri. People thanked him by making edits of his avatar. Or something.
Nullies
What are they?
They're parodies of the NFT fad, namely the Bored Ape NFTs and its imitators. I cannot show an example of said NFTs, because they are non-fungible, and as such they are immune to right click save as. The Nullies themselves are edits of a pixelated rendition of @Null's avatar.
Where did they come from?
@Trigger Me Timbers started doling them out - for free, I might add - during the height of the NFT craze. Truly a once in a lifetime offer.
What's the story?
An NFT - or at least the form of NFT most people are familiar with - is basically a procedurally generated image that you can buy the rights to. Think Pokemon cards, but instead of a physical card it's a digital image. This isn't the place to discuss whether or not NFTs are a complete waste of money, but many people weren't very happy about this new trend and it led to numerous parodies. Nullies are one such parody.
Wigglers/Chibi Keffals/Kiwilers
What are they?
They're edits of "wigglers", an animation that the streamer Keffals apparently uses.
Where did they come from?
Many people have made their own at this point, but @AMHOLIO started the trend.
What's the story?
Keffals is a much reviled figure on Kiwi Farms. It seemed only natural that, after Keffals started using the "wiggler" in a desperate attempt at appearing cute, farmers would start creating parodies of it, often with the goal of corrupting the pseudo-innocent nature of the original animation.
