What's the point of .webp images and why are they're more pathetic then .avif

Just noticed this site converts my images to webp yesterday.
Whats the deal with webp? I assume everyone hates it.

So why are a lot of sites using it? Is there some pro to using it that I don't know of over just using a simple jpeg, gif or whatever.

I heard google is behind this format. Are they just forcing everyone to use it in some way? If so why did this null guy bend the knee to google.

Tell me about webp. Why does it suck?

Isn't it because they take up less space so they can speed up load times?
Load times and, for the companies that pioneered the format, storage savings in the seven figure range.
What's baffling to me is why Microsoft in particular is having such a hard time integrating native webp support into Windows. Photos still can't handle it half of the time even though Paint, which is literal decades older, handles it ok.

I need to find a website that uses uncompressed png's for all its assets that I can link whenever someone asks why a site is using webp
