I remember when somebody joked how Islam was the world's most autistic religion because it forced the adherents to pray at specific times while facing a particular direction, to end phrases in specific ways, to only eat certain foods and wear certain same-looking clothes and even wipe their asses only with a specific hand. Well, one day, I was looking up autism percentages by country out of curiosity and was pretty surprised to see so many Middle Eastern countries at the top. (source). This paper describing geographical prevalence of developmental disorders, including autism, also shows very high numbers in the area.
That would kinda explain the extreme fundamentalist tendencies, adherence to special rules and routines and art consisting of nothing but geometric patterns, but I wonder what's the cause for such disproportion? Significant age difference between husband and wife + widespread incest?

It's this, undeniably. Egypt has like 85% of marriages between first-cousins, for generation after generation. Pakistan isn't much better IIRC. Ironically enough, the real arab countries aren't plagued by this as much as the culturally arab/muslim countries. Malaysia and Indonesia seem to be generally slow-in-the-minds even without the inbreeding, so there's that, too.
