It seems like the guy playing the accordion is more or less the "Father" of the residential block he now lives in with several families. He freely moves in and out of their business, helping out wherever he can, and they love him for it. He did his service in the Great Patriotic War, saw his share of horrors, but didn't let it get him down and carried his accordion with him wherever he went, even playing it on the train ride back home, still wearing his dress uniform.
