What's up with the 'Virtual Youtubers' thread?

It is indeed very strange.
My guess is that it started out as something to make fun of Vtubers, but like many plagued threads eventually was subverted into becoming a fan thread about the topic itself.

As to why it's a thing, the fact is these people are a little...limited. They wouldn't be engaging in the hobby they are otherwise. As such the likelihood that any of them are going to be able to run a discussion forum of their own is pretty low, and if they tried it would absolutely, immediately, within probably a week, be taken over by trannies who'd subvert it to be about their pet political/social issues.

As such they have to come here to KF to be granted the freedom to post without the constant fear of some castrated subhuman idiot coming in to dissect their verbage and ban anyone who looks at them sideways.

So personally I see it as charity. Captain J Moon dislikes the animes, but he dislikes seeing people stifled even more, so the retards are granted their own little retard pen where they can go on about their retard shit free from molestation by tranny jannies, with the only trade off being yelled at or made fun of sometimes.

The thread has a lot of people who post only there because it's literally the best place to discuss the topic on the English-speaking Internet. The most popular subreddits are associated with agencies and thus forbid discussion on "roommates" (the real people who perform the characters) or discussion critical of the agency itself, and the image boards fall victim to the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. The KF thread allows for cheerleading as well as rumor-mongering, roommate-posting, and discussion about the less positive aspects of the industry while remaining mostly civil and free of coomers. So it's attracting a lot of people who are interested in the hobby but aren't really interested in lolcows or politics or the other things discussed on KF.

Read the first pages of BOTH threads and you'll find out that's not the case:
but like many plagued threads eventually was subverted into becoming a fan thread about the topic itself.
They didn't start out as a Community Watch thread, therefore wasn't "plagued."
They were ALWAYS fan threads or at least started by those with a piqued interest.
My question is why you and a lot of users think "Multimedia = Community Watch" when threads in Multimedia are usually started by fans (or those with casual interest) wanting to discuss said interest?
Take the Ben Shapiro threads for instance:
See the tonal difference?
And before anyone asks "WhY iSn'T tHeRe A cOmMuNiTy WaTcH tHrEaD?"
There is one:
It's like they're on a different planet and there are users that only post THERE.
There are complaints regarding the same thing about users in the Weeb Wars subforum.
There are users in other subforums that almost exclusively post in regards to a certain topic or in the threads related to said topic.
Just why is this phenomenon even a thing?
If you are talking about how VTubers went from something so niche to how it is now, you can track it back to the COVID lockdowns.
With every other form of entertainment shut down for a few weeks, guess what didn't?

I tried to go to the vtuber thread several times to gain some understanding of what people like about the phenomenon and every time it was like wandering into bizarro world. People were saying words I could read and understand, but there was some underlying understanding that I lacked woven into what I was reading.

Is the idea that some people come to KF and only post in certain places that weird? There's almostly certainly people in the Thunderdome that only post in here.
There seems to be a recurring expectation that people should post everywhere, despite the forum being huge, there'll always be some forums people prefer to others. Also I doubt it's really true. People usually post in a couple of different places, just not everywhere. Feels like something people just throws out to try and pretend a place on kf is 'other', like the Thunderdome.

Also don't get the confusion about it.

There are streamers on youtube.
Some of them stream using an avatar, mostly anime inspired.
These have become a hit so there's lots of them and they've got a fandom. Ie lots of gossip.

Feels simple?

Aside from the level of activity it's pretty similar to other large multimedia threads.
