A lot of Kiwis talk about using a hobby as a replacement for a personality.

These people being shallow and not much going on. But I don't think there has been any discussion about this.
We all talk about people who obsess over Star wars or Marvel or Gaming, but never further it.
Now personally I'm a lifelong car enthusiast and motorsports fan and if I was asked who I was they may be one thing I mention.
Eventually I want to get into motorsport as a job, not matter how small or how little I'm paid because being in that world I believe would give me meaning. I also do sim racing as an extension of this. Motorsport is an important part of who I am. I enjoy playing games every now and then. I have a passion for history. I like watching every now and then, transformers, a few old Disney movies, DBZ, historical documentaries, nature documentaries, sports documentaries and is invested in star wars and up until endgame, invested in the MCU. I haven’t bought every single MCU film or gone to watch every MCU film. I’ve chosen the ones I like. I enjoyed talking about theories or what ifs and discussing what would happen next with friends.
I also watch my local football club with my family.
Most people are lifelong sports fans and are nice people. Most of the population enjoy at least one of the pop culture franchises (Marvel/Star Wars/ect.), engage in the lore and they are functional adults.
Personally, the people who replace their personality with a hobby are people who mindlessly consoom everything of one IP and defend everything about it even when the general opinion is that the product was poor. Not someone who buys a collector's item every now and then. Not someone who has a couple of die casts or models of cars or trains or whatever. If you want a statue of Thanos or whatever, if you want his gauntlet or whatever, if you have the money by all means go for it. Even better if you make it yourself. Just make sure it has room to be.
The people who replace their personality with a hobby can ONLY talk about that one thing. They compare everything to that one thing. Trump is voldemort is one example. Now, I think most of us quote movies every now and then and most of us can have a laugh about it. That isn't a problem personally.
Its people who's lives revolve around something who quote everything every time they speak
I don't think it should it be a problem for people to enjoy things. If they have genuine pleasure out of it, and have other stuff around it, I don't care. Not contributing to society playing games/watching movies all the time and not doing it for entertainment or streaming reasons, is of course a problem. If you aren't in a job, or a place of education and play games/watch movies all day, yes that's a NEET. A streamer or pro gamer is fine if they have a following or make enough money to go full time.
I watch a lot of sim racers stream; they don't seem to be shallow and seem to have genuine enjoyment and are well rounded.
They have families or relationships. Some friends have been gained by enjoying that hobby too
My guess is most people have a variety of different interests and hobbies, some of which are more niche than others.
For example, in my free time I do the occasional online racing championship.
We all choose leagues based on what time/day they run so they don't clash with anything.
Sometimes someone reports that they can't make the race because of real life issues/events
When someone has only one interest and only one interest then I think that becomes a problem.
But then again, if someone makes a YouTube channel about an interest, they like such as sport or stream games, is that bad? TFS makes DBZ videos only, so surely, they have no personality?
RedLetterMedia make their lives around watching and reviewing movies. Mike talks about Star Trek, making Star Trek references, or comparing something to a ST episode. Roger Ebert spent his entire life watching and reviewing movies. His entire life was dedicated towards consuming movies. Surely, he was shallow and didn't have any personality?
Does the concept of replacing a personality with something even exist? Or is this an issue of having one entire interest or rather people being too obsessed with things?
