"Pride Month" occurs in June in order to commemorate the Stonewall riots which occurred in late June 1969. No one cared about it for a long time but in the last 25 years it has really taken off in terms of being celebrated. To give you an idea of how this came to be so commonly accepted, US President Bill Clinton declared June a "Gay & Lesbian Pride Month" in 1999. Then another US President Barrack Obama declared June the LGBT Pride Month every year he was in office. Add that to the general rise in acceptance of homosexuality (in part due to media and gay marriage being legalized more around the world) this is what has made June the corporate pandering time of the year it is today.
