Where did the substitution of the letter V for the letter U come from?

Why do people type "RETVRN to MONKEY" or "BVLL." I don't get it? Is this to bypass a word filter, if so, where is that filter from, and why to I see so many V substitutions these days? Where did this exceptional way of writing originate from? HELP! I DON'T VNDERSTAND!

Here's a cute cat for your trouble:

To be more specific; the romans used it in their Capitalis monumentalis - self-explanatory but it means "monumental capitals" - and then mostly on major monuments. See the roman pantheon.

See the TERTIVM ? That's supposed to be Tertius.

People use it to (ironically or not) ascribe a sort of monumental reverance for whatever word they replace the U's with V's in, like people have for ancient Rome and the ancient Roman empire

All users are correct.

Romans did it historically, but if we're discussing the modern phenomenon, it's almost certainly from TRVE KVLT.

(although in my experience, TRVE KVLT was always meant ironically. There are unironic "true kult" blackmetal fans, but they generally weren't the ones saying TRVE KVLT; it was the FALSE KVLT, faggy deathmetal, and pseudo-ironic blackmetal fans who used TRVE KVLT ironically, in order to mock hardcore blackmetal fans)

I think he means the recent trend online were you revert from normal English spelling to ancient Roman. He's asking why did people suddenly start doing it now.
Actually both! Both parts were answered. Thanks.

Q: "Where did this exceptional way of writing originate from?"
A: Ancient Rome @Miss Misery

Q: "Why to I see to much so many V substitutions these days?"
A: "People use it to (ironically or not) ascribe a sort of monumental reverance for whatever word they replace the U's with V's in, like people have for ancient Rome and the ancient Roman empire" @DJ Grelle

We did it Reddit!
