Why are obese drivers more likely to die in a car crash than lean drivers?

I thought rolls of fat would cushion obese drivers reducing injury and death, but that's not the situation.

I'd assume they might have more trouble getting out of the results of an accident that might otherwise not kill someone, which could either increase the amount of time before potentially life-saving care can be provided at the bare minimum, or potentially just trapping them, compounded by the fact that the fatter you are, the harder it is for medical science to save you if they do get you out.

Also the chances of something like the shock of a more serious accident causing a cardiac event are probably higher in the obese.
