As a follow up to the other serious answer, if they're involved in the 'trans community' there's a bunch of people who deem themselves 'name givers' who 'help people pick new names'. You see a bunch of similar generic names because the same person (or same small group of people) is doing the naming most of the time.

It's about the same as anyone who changes their name tbh, they always go for these designer names that sound ridiculous. I guess in some cases it's practical because it can have the same nickname as they are used to being called but often just a case of being able to pick any name and wanting to sound cool. If I had a really boring or ethnic sounding name maybe I'd change it too like that group Crystal Castles. Claudio Paolo Palmieri and Margaret Osborne doesn't sound as cool as Ethan Kath and Alice Glass.

Because they have an idealized view of what a man should be (as is the case with MtFs, although they are in general even more obsessed with sex). Most are very young girls, with limited world experience heavily filtered by the internet.

Because they want a male name which isn't harsh or plain like most standard male names. You don't meet many ftm called things like David, Richard, John, or Harold. Most traditional mens' names have a weight to them, a solidity and an authority. It's particularly noticable in anglo names like Harold and Edward which come from the Old English. A heavy name like this doesn't fit with the softboy twink that the ftm is attracted to and which she wishes to become, so she doesn't take it.

Names like Gabe and Seb and Aidan and Harrison and Isaac have a sort of softness to them, they sound like childrens' names and they're not threatening. It's the same reason why mtfs tend to call themselves little-girl names like Alice and Emily and Mia. Imagine some doughy 5"3 chick with poofy blue hair and gauges trying to introduce herself to you as Robert or Wilfred or George. It'd be ridiculous.

Personally I think it's even funnier when they give themselves super kewl fancy pants names like Ebony and Warlock and Lamia. Some sad fat troon with male pattern baldness in a stretched-out dollzkill corset and pentagram bra trying to convince you that he's the granddaughter of the witches they didn't burn. Hilarious.
