Why do people support famewhore behavior?

After the twitch leaks, I wanted to make this thread because the internet now feels made to cater specifically to famewhores and their enablers. The ecelebs I hear about now remind me more of Jersey Shore then actual people I'd want to talk to, so why do thousands idealize them, when their main claim to fame is that they have x followers. I assume tiktok is worse, and whatever derivatives spawn afterwards, but supporting famewhores has been a common mentality I've seen for most of my life. Are we naturally meant to autistically focus on certain people's actions and desires to be the center of attention? Was the mentality set in place generations before because of Hollywood? Interested in hearing kiwis thoughts

it's no different from regular old pre internet celebrities. almost none of these people are deserving of the fame, attention, and outright worship they get from their 'fans' but that never stopped anybody. it's a side effect brought about by the existence of mass media, which exploits peoples social instincts.

This plus using media heavily promotes building para social relationships.

People are always wanting to be judged and to judge others. As Morpheus from Deus Ex once put it,
  • "The human organism always worships. First it was the gods, then it was fame (the observation and judgment of others), next it will be the self-aware systems you have built to realize truly omnipresent observation and judgment."

Its much simpler than that. The people who idolize these celebrities are envious of their fame and attention, but they lack the courage, ambition (or sometimes, the lack of dignity) that those people have. So the next best thing is living vacariously through them by contributing to them. Sending a few bucks to to the Jersey Shore douchebags or a fat redneck like Ethan Ralph or a dipshit like DSP makes incredibly boring 9-5ers feel rebellious and like they're helping keep the dream alive that not everyone has to succeed in society by playing by the rules.
