It's a result of the deconstructionist literary concept that the author's intent is not the end-all/be-all of a work's message. The interpretation you can derive from a work through analysis is just as valid as the author's own interpretation. So if you, through any mix of proper analysis and motivated reasoning, can make the book/movie/song/whatever "mean" what you want it to mean, then it's a perfectly valid conclusion to make. And if you can back it up in an internally consistent way, that interpretation can be deemed just as insightful, if not moreso, than whatever the author intended.

There's a reason some people dedicate their lives to studying one single author. The mental masturbation this field allows results in people pouring way more time and effort an analyzing a work than it's creator put in actually making it.
