Why does the artist community seems to attract the mentally ill? - It's rare to see a skilled artist who's also mentally well

One of the most universally hated community here is the furry fandom, which revolves around creating art of anthropomorphic animals and sometimes dressing up in fursuits.

We got many cows from deviantart, tumblr, and twitter that draw weird shit and end up cows because of it. Comic artists like Pizzacake and some other careercows also end up here directly because of their drawings.

From my personal experience, the local art university in my area might as well be an asylum. I'm sure plenty of you that lives or work near an art university have ran into erratic people that went to that university.

I don't think I have seen any other hobby as full of cows and the generally insane as drawing. Why is that? Is it because they don't go outside and touch grass?

I'm inclined to agree with this. The most skilled artists I know are also the most mentally ill. I know many of them and only one of them is relatively sane, but she is a pooner, so I can't say she's completely sane

A lot of dedicated artists do have an intense passion and devotion for their craft. But I don't think it goes as far as it crossing into the territory of mental illnesses for all artists.

Can confirm, am STEMgroid. Not only is STEM work more lucrative and consistent, but trying to git gud at art has for the most part been a miserable experience for me. While I am jealous of the autists who are good at art, I'm content with my current skillset and wouldn't wish being an artist for a living on my worst enemy.

I think that they're sort of psychologically pushed into it from young ages where issues with self-esteem, escaping reality, or the disillusion of rebelling against the parent shapes their mindset. Now how degenarate they get from that point depends how far down the rabbit hole they fall, I think we're not even close to seeing the worst of it with anime porn becoming more widespread. Porn unfortunately is the easiest way for the starving artist to make a quick buck because modern art is retarded and it's just a shit career choice.

However, there are still a lot of people who know how to draw in some capacity. So you lump yourself in with them, because this is a skill, it's in demand, and you can't just hire any moron to do it.

So the lowest 10% think they are as valuable as the top 10%.
