He was great in Godfather 2, goodfellas and other mob movies. Now he’s in bad grandpa

He's good when he's got a good script/character to work with.

Take Joker, for instance. That was a well-written movie, and DeNiro did a great job as Murray. Yet, decades before that, he was doing embarrassing shit like Rocky & Bullwinkle and Meet the Parents, and it always felt very forced.

DeNiro's not a bad actor, per se, he's just not a great actor. There are plenty of actors who can turn cringy roles into interesting and convincing stuff, but DeNiro is not one of them.

So his past as a good actor is a mere coincidence that he got cast for the roles?

He stopped caring / gave up

He was never a very good actor, Godfather II < I, he was always okay at best. He was in some good movies but almost never elevated them by himself (Heat, Goodfellas, Casino etc.). The only movies in which he added something were Jackie Brown, Cape Fear and that one where he played a braindead retard (a role he was a natural at)

He's an all-time-great actor who apparently takes every role offered to him, for money or just out of boredom (more likely). Same with Pacino, and Brando towards the end of his career.

You can dump on him for his low standards, but nobody is going to remember Dirty Grandpa or The Intern 50 years from now anyway, and everyone is going to remember Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, so it's not like it matters.

If you want a truly horrific and completely soulless De Niro performance I recommend checking out Killing Season. It also has John Travolta playing a serbian and the accent he puts on is so fucking bad I cant even describe it. I know they're just phoning it in for money but my god. They also only utilize about 4 "sets" in the movie, it was probably some kind of attempt by the studio to skirt around taxes by declaring loses on an obvious pile of shit movie.

He is still a great actor. He just doesn't get the scripts and really doesn't care - he gets big bucks for doing anything. Why bother trying to give a performance of a lifetime for a garbage script?

the list of great films he has done...is a hell of a list.

He’s been in some great movies (Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, Godfather 1 and 2) but you could make the argument he was great in those because of the great directors attached to the movies. He’s a good actor, just not a great one

He needs Scorsese to bring out his best acting. Without Marty in his life he becomes a washed-up mess.
then this would seem more like a compliment towards marty than deniro, an actor who requires (not just benefits from) good direction has serious problems

to further the point, leo dicaprio who is a thoroughly middling actor was absolutely excellent in wolf of wall street
